Saving Marigold Seeds

Does anyone have experience in saving marigod seeds? Do you have to wait till next spring to plant these seeds? And are they easy to collect?

I have collected my own marigold seeds for 10 years.Yes I wait till spring to plant the seeds.I plant them May 15.Last frost date for my area. They will self seed somewhat. So I know you wouldn't have to wait till spring to plant. However it is best to wait till spring. You will get more plants, plus you plant them where you want them.If you plant them earlier alot of them will rot.Pick the spent brown blossom off the plant.Let them dry out completely.Store in a ziplock bag till spring. When you are ready to plant, roll the flower bud between your fingers to separate the seeds from the bud.Don't worry about peices of shaft or the dried flower petals.Rough up the soil.Toss in the whole mess.Barely cover with peat moss.Keep moist till germination(a week to 10 days). They will flower in 4 to 6 weeks after planting. They keep blooming till the snow flys.Keep dead heading and save those seeds. Its easier then it sounds and you will have more seeds then you will want.Edge

Thank you so much. Buying those seeds & plants are getting expensive.

Your welcome. You can use the same process for many annuals and perennials. Some hybrid plants the seeds are sterile. Some seeds don't come true. And there is always cross pollination from insects. But the cost is zero.I have had good luck with zinnias,cosmos,balsam,4 o'clocks, gomphernias, sunflowers, summer savory, bronze fennel, winter savory, balloon flowers, sea holly, ritro blue, basil, others.Perennials won't bloom till the second year.Gardening is a process.Edge
