Doyle's Thornless Blackberries

Placitas, NM

I received two beautiful blackberry plants from Doyle's (at www.fruitsandberries.com). Although the stem and foliage was only about four inches, it had eight gorgeous inches of roots. I just planted them yesterday, and they had the richest, most luxurious root system of any transplants I've done. This is my first attempt at blackberries, so wish me luck.

I haven't tried Doyle's yet, but I do have Apache, Navaho, Arapaho, and Brazos blackberries in my berry patch. It does look like a good cultivar for you. Just remember that blackberries fruit on second year growth! The first year you aren't likely to get any fruit, but the second year you should have a bumper crop.

I'm just waiting for my youngest to discover the blackberries in the bramble. She loves them so much it's down right funny to watch her with them. Somehow, I think my dreams of making homemade blackberry jam from the berries in my yard is going to remain a dream for a long time.

We live close to a greenway and pick wild blackberries in the summer. They are small, but delicious. We have to beat deer, birds and other humans to the feast!
