Daylillies

Lawrence, KS

My daylillies are full land beautiful right now, but after they bloom, the leaves start turning yellow, usually only on one side of the leaf vein. Eventually the leaves die - is there something wrong with my soil? By the end of the summer, I've cut them all down and they start over. HELP!

I don't think you're doing anything wrong at all. It's natural for the foliage on many things to turn yellow and eventually die back after the blooming cycle is over. My daylily foliage does the same thing and it starts at the tip of the foliage on the side you can see. It's a good thing that you don't cut back the foliage until late summer of fall. Even though the foliage is turning yellow, the foliage is still gathering nutrients and energy that the plant needs in order to return and bloom the following year. The soil is probably fine. Daylilies son't seem to be too picky when it comes to soil types.

Judy, here is some info on daylilies for you. I have found with my own that the leaves are much like hair....a few die off and are replaced in an on-going process. I cut my daylilies back to about 6 inches in July when they start looking wimpy, give them a good feeding and they come back revitalized and a healthy green.

Thanks to all who replied to my daylilly question. I feel better about their appearance now. Will continue to do what I'm doing. :)

They are so very hardy, it is hard to go wrong with them.
