Ideas for shady front yardsummer and fall color

State College, PA

Hi all,
I'm working on a plan to pull out all the poorly growing sod in my front yard and replace it with shade/partial shade loving shrubs and flowers. I already have a nice rose of sharon right in the middle, and it is a rectangle edged with an evergreen hedge. I would like to put in some azaleas, mountain laurel, and bleeding hart, but am kind of stuck for later in the season. I was thinking some hardy geraniums, black eyed Susan, and some Asiatic lilies for later in the year, but was trying to think of something more substantial, does anyone have any other ideas?

Also, I'd like to take the rectangular shape and make it a little more organic looking. Are there any rules of thumb when laying out organic shaped beds to help them look good?

Rose of Sharon are more of a sun loving shrub. Also Asiatic's favor more sun than shade. Only certain varieties of Black Eyed Susan do well with more shade.Fulgida being one of them.
How about hydrangeas, huecheras, astibles, hostas and violas?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by organic shaped bed?

I am looking for ideas about plants that will do well in the shade that are drought resistant as I do not like to have things that need a lot of water. Any ideas?
