how to kill a young tree

Niagara Falls, Canada

I have a young maple tree growing on my property line. The property line is only a few feet from the side of my house and I am worried about having damage done to my house from the roots. How can I kill this tree? Should I use a copper nail ,some kind of chemical . I am not sure how to do this you"re help would be appreciated.

How big is it? Can it be dug up?

i'm with flowerjen :) you should see if you can dig it up, relocate or give it away before deciding to off it ^_^? If it's too big to do any of these and you really want to, I suggest you call a tree guy around your area and just ask for the best way to do it :( [sigh! i've been wanting a maple tree too :) wish i could dig it up for ya and save it ^_^]. Goodluck to you and the tree ;)

I'd didn't reply to this because I had the impression that this tree might not be his. The quickest way to eliminate a tree you aren't trying to save is a saw. I become suspicious when someone wants to poison a tree. If I'm wrong about this I apologize. -Doug

Doug, you are wrong. I too had some kind of tree growing 2 feet from the corner of my house. The branches were growing under my roof shingles. It was there when I bought the house. You bet I got rid of it.

First, I cut down as many branches that I could reach standing on a ladder. I sawed the trunk to 6" from the ground. Drilled several holes in the trunk and poured undiluted Roundup into the holes over the summer' The Roundup I used was the one for shrubs and hard to kill plants. It killed it over the summer. I did the same with a lilac bush that was growing at the side of my house. I could not walk from the front to the back since it was in the way in the 3ft of space between my house and fence. Lilacs sprout from underground roots so took more time to kill.

I never could understand why anyone would plant a tree or large shrub so close to a house.

which came first, the house or the tree ^_^? (just kidding)
anyways, i hope the original poster has found the solution that best fit him and hopefully the tree :). i'm no tree-hugger but ya can't help but feel a wittle sad for the young maple :(. BUT to each his own ^_^!

I wasn't having a problem with someone wanting to get rid of a tree too close to a house. Poisoning a tree before cutting it down doesn't make cutting it down easier, but harder. You did it the way I have. Cut it down and then deal with the stump resprouting.
