DAILY PICS VOL. 313

Marlton, NJ

So many wonderful photos on the last thread! if you would like a look back here is the link. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1090229/

I'll start off this new thread with some shots from Cape May point State Park and Brigantine National Wildlife Reserve last week. Most pics were taken from the car at Brigantine.

Here is an Osprey hovering over the lake looking for fish in the fresh water pond in front of the Hawk Watch in Cape May.

At Brigantine there were a lot of Double-crested Cormorants around.

The birds seem to come in waves. One minute there are all Stellar Jays, the next will be Grosbeaks. This moment it was Cowbirds.

Sorry Pelle...

Good pics, pelle. I think the world would be better off with more birds and fewer casinos, but maybe that's just me.

Today's baby pic at 9-days old. Daddy was a little fussy this morning. I could feel the air from his wings as he dived and fussed at me while I took pics. For the second morning, I could not raise these little rascals. I cheeped and poked and they just slept. Maybe I'm going to have to start taking pics before breakfast.

I think this is a Nashville Warbler. Confirmation would be appreciated.

I agree tht you are on the right side of the casinos, Pelle. Nice pics.

I've had several Brown-headed Cowbirds around recently. Bird-dogging the doves. I turned the ports around in this feeder so they couldn't toss all the millet out. I've put out millet for buntings, but none yet. Nor orioles.

Male cowbird on the feeder. They are actually handsome birds and I feel get a lot of anthropomorphistic bias because of their nesting habits. While they often get the blame for the decline in species like Black-capped Vireos, the real culprit is the guy who reduced the vireos' habitat and points the finger at someone else.

red and rock, The Cowbirds are handsome and I like the sounds they make.

red, the chicks are so sweet!

Bill, Thats a beautiful Warbler! It does look like it might be a Nashville but Resin will know for sure.

Thank you Pelle for the new thread. It's a pleasure to watch those Ospreys. I can only immagine how nice it would be to see birds coming and going in waves. Whoaaa! I'm so glad you're getting about and enjoying nature.

Quoting:
... but maybe it's just me...
I feel/think/believe just as you do. And ahhhhh, to return to our world of birding. Those pic. of the Babies Blue just warm our hearts. Thank you for sharing.

Since I swapped the feeder out for cleaning purpose. Lord Byron and his Missus aren't none- so- happy about it! He can't seem to figure out how to get to the seeds. Where as the agile Mr. Lincoln (Northern Cardinal) and his mate can get to them easily too. Oh, Ms Nelly (a Redbellied WP not in the pic -- managed this different feeder just fine also). I've got a plan where I will need to put up multiple feeders out like Hack's mentioned on previous thread.

Agree with Nashville Warbler..nice shot!

Bill, I like your Warbler, cute little fella!

Lord Byron (Redheaded Woodpecker) is out right perturbed with the new feeder below:

Wait, wait he has gotten to the cage, but what's next?

Thumbnail by Lily_love

That's a boy!!! He's succeeded!

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I must confess; Ms Nelly (the Redbellied WP) is much more clever. It took her less than a day to figure out the cage feeder. Where as Lord Byron the Redheaded WP--it took him 2 days to figure it out.

Just spotted the first indigo bunting of the season--right on time. They have arrived April 24-26 in past years. Not a great picture, but it is the first. Also heard/saw a cardinal fighting its reflection at the porch window. No, not the one in the picture-- it was a female. Usually see the males beating their little brains out.

Lily, Those are very nice pics of the Red-headed Woodpecker! Yes all the woodpeckers are very resourceful at getting food no matter what the feeder. The Cardinals need a more spacious perch.

Congratulations sunfarm! Good to see some of the Buntings arriving!

Not a very good shot but there were a nice looking pair of Bald Eagles coming around, here is one. They were too late to steal the fish from the Osprey.

Nice start pelle, I liked all your pics, but the Forster's Tern in flight is a definite keeper.

rockminer - my Cowbirds have become scarce. AND can't confirm the bird as a Nashville Warbler, but it is pretty.

reddirtretiree - nice snap of the Cowbird and your feeder is just like several of mine. I like bottom plate.

Lily_love - I really enjoyed the series of pics you took of Lord Byron, the Redheaded Woodpecker, and your new feeder. You could almost see the wheels turning in its head.

sunfarm - congrats on the Indigo Bunting. I've seen two so far, one I get a pic of, the other flew off while I was getting ready to snap a pic.

pelletory - that male Blue-winged Teal looks really nice. Good pic. I never seen one is person.

Nice shots everyone and Pelle thanks for the new thread and for the pics from your recent trip to Cape May. That is definitely on my list of places I want to visit someday!

After 3 long days and nights I finally found all 5 baby Blues....what a relief!!

Don't you love spring time? Nature unfolds the most precious happenings not many people would have noticed--but us birders! Rose those pics. made my day. Thank you for sharing. Last year, I've got the priviledge to follow an Eastern Phobes fledglings until they were about the size of your Blue Bird-fledglings. How old are they? I can imagine how worried you were; having not seen them for 3 long days and nights.

Norman, OK

Great shots, dellrose. Mine aren't fledged yet and I'm already worried about them. I've never seen a Blue Grosbeak in OK, though a couple were reported around here this past w/e. I know they have them around Tulsa. Saw my FOS flock of Cattle Egrets fly over this a.m. Still waiting on buntings and orioles.

Marlton, NJ

Rose, They are so adorable!!! Congratulations!
Nice one of the Grosbeak too!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Blue Grosbeak is very cool!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks guys...they were 15 and 16 days old when they fledged...too early for me!!

Red...They do tend to worry you don't they? We are still waiting on the Buntings also but the Orchard Orioles have arrived so the rest are not far behind!!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Great photos everyone!!
Pelle, thanks for the great start. Your Osprey photos are great! I just got my first photo of one with a fish this past weekend too.
Rockminer and Red, great pictures!!
Lily, I love reading all about your birds.
Rose, those bb babies are just "priceless". I can't believe they all sit in a row like that!! I love that Blue Grosbeak-wow. Had to look that one up and just one has ever been found in our area. At least that gives me a chance!

Here's my first of the season Osprey with a fish.

Rockminer... good shot of your warbler.

Lily... love your Red-head!

Dellrose... cute photos of all the baby BBs together!

Duc... great shot of your osprey!

I have been so busy the past four days that I missed #312 altogether. I am off work this week, but we are doing some spring-cleaning, and hubby and I are spending alot of time out taking photos! (More fun than the cleaning!) Went to the zoo on Saturday... more to come from that!

Went to the river last night and the herons were out-fishing the men! It was hard to keep up with them, they were catching so many fish! It was awesome to watch though!

Remember those old beef commercials??? Well, this is my take on it... a Great Blue Heron with Atlantic Shad

"Shad... It's what's for dinner!"
