This site is a wealth of information and I appreciate all the input. I recently planted a standard bottle brush (red cluster) and it looks as though it is on the tail end of its first bloom. From what I understand this tree can be cut back hard. I would like to try to get the tree promote new growth and make it full (it is a bit thin). When is the best time to cut it back and how far do I cut it. It is a lollipop shape now with about a 4 ft diameter head. I like that size just want it to get more full. Thanks again!
Trimming back a bottle brush tree.
my suggestion would be to only cut stray limbs that are in your way. it's hard to explain but if you cut the flowers off, you will slow down growth. the new growth extends beyond the flower tips. also, by cutting it, you will promote more "witchy" type growth. in other words, when you make a cut, about four or five new stems will take off from that one cut. the limb then gets really heavy when it begins flowering again. i hope this makes sense. bottlebrush is one shrub/small tree that i do not prune except for a stray limb if at all possible.
I agree with Trackinsand, bottle brushes require very little pruning. Here is some info on care
