Hosta care (coleus Luminous)

Doncaster, England, United Kingdom

I have got a big leaved Hosta yesterday i was wondering what soil they prefer and how to care for them and the most effective way of preventing slug or snail damage. At the moment i have planted it in a medium sized plant pot and but allot of dead leaves from last year's trees around the plant.

Sorry its not a coleus got labels mixed up

I have hostas all over my yard, and my soil varies from very rich like potting soil, to very sandy in some spots. They've done fine in all of them but seem to do the best where I have a lot of trees overhead and the soil is less sandy. Luckily I don't seem to have slugs though.
I love hostas, they're reliable and pretty easy to care for, and I've been able to split a few of them once they got too large.

I have slugs that I control with Diatomaceous earth and little saucers (bottle lids) of beer deep enough for them to drown in the beer. Don't forget to look under the pot occasionally for more slugs and snails. I move pots frequently and let the birds swoop down and grab the slugs and worms that were hiding.
