Hello, I'm new to DG and I live in a 1936 English style cottage. Very saddly we had to remove an Oak tree that was told to me by the previous owner that is was over 200 years old:( It was hollowed out and there were racoons and chipmunks that lived in and around it plus it was leaning towards my house. After much regret we called in the tree trimmers, because if anything would have happened to my house it would be very hard to duplicate. I love my cottage with it's arched front door, loads of charm and thick tile roof that looks like wood shingles! Now we have this empty space in the front yard where the Mighty Oak once stood. I love the smaller ornamental trees such as the crabtrees and plumtrees, and also like the birch trees! Any suggestions?
What kind of tree should I plant?
Why don't you post a photo of the front yard with the house so we can see style and color.
tell about your Zone and sun exposure etc.
Do you like formal -- are you planning to plant around it?
Do you want the tree to dominate or are you planning a small bench or other yard ornamentation - bird bath etc.?
Also is the stump from that tree gone?
Looks like a good place for a mighty oak to lay down some roots.
Your house sounds adorable, would LOVE to see a pic.
missingrosie is correct, we need all the info to give you suggestions for that area.
Hi, thanks for the replies! I will send some pics, and I live in Northeast Ohio and my front yard is sunny, nice morning sun and so forth! Yes the stump has been removed and now we have a nice big area of nice soil, just waiting and ready for a tree:)!! As I said before my cottage is older and there are alot of shrubs and other trees and lots of ground cover around on the 2 ac that we own. I should also say that there is an old tile sidewalk that goes across the front yard to the door, my old oak tree was just in front of it. There was before a big brick circle that surrounded the oak tree and there were some spring perreinals and some fall mums that I moved to a new location! I'm not sure if I want to plant around the new tree or not. I miss my huge oak tree, but aleast I have some (3) that have seeded and have been growing in front of my house closer in. We are very carefully planning to move them, the tree trimmer said yes it can be done! They are a nice size already. I also have two other massive oaks further back on the property! The trimmers took the smaller stuff and we had them leave the nice big limbs and such. We have a fireplace and 2 barbecue pits on the property. I'll send pics soon! I love my cottage and nature and trees and flowers, especially Foxglove!
I didn't get a chance to correct my spelling on some words, sorry!

I'd choose a lovely serviceberry..... lots of multi season beauty. A small bench and a birdbath too. Nothing can replace that huge oak and so I'd take an entirely different track with something ornamental, useful, and beautiful. Google a photo.
