Suckers of forthysia

Hudson, NY(Zone 5a)

Can you did out the suckers and plant them? Please help. I have a huge area that I need to have privacy and wanted to fill the area in with forthysia, and did not want to buy bushes!!

You do cuttings this way, don't know if digging out a sucker would work, wouldn't hurt to try it.

Propagation of Forsythia:

Forsythia are grown from cuttings. Select cuttings from new growth. Cut a three to six inch branch, and place the end into moist soil. Keep the soil moist to aid rooting. Rooting should only take a few weeks.

Transplant rooted cuttings anytime. However, transplanting established plants is best done in winter while the plants are dormant.

Thanks Flowerjen! About 3 of the suckers are making it! So excited! I did not have to buy a thing.

I dug out a few suckers from one of ours last year and replanted them, and they are doing fine. They're still pretty small, so almost no bloom this year, but i think they just need to grow some more.

I tried it with one and it didn't make it....I later found out it's best to wait until they're finished blooming.
Is that what you folks did, or did I just have bad luck. I plan to try again, and they are done flowering now.

It was after blooming- though not because I knew that was how it ought to be done- I just did it as part of some spring yard clean-up last year. I was tidying up around the larger plant and dug out the little ones. They actually ended up living in pots for a few months because the bed to put them in permanently wasn't ready yet. Maybe the looser richer soil did them some good.

Mine are only around a foot tall now, so years away from being able to provide much privacy.

they'll grow quicker than you think. They're like weeds around here. They're pretty enough when blooming, I guess, but i hate them because of the ease of their spreading. I think blooms only come on stock older than a season. I might be wrong, but I think I read that somewhere.
