Using cornstalks as mulch in my garden??

Spirit Lake, IA(Zone 4b)

What do you think cornstalks would do to my garden if I use it as mulch between my plants? I am a beginner gardener, so I have no idea if it would be a good idea or a bad one. A farmer friend has offered to give me one of those large round bales to use, if I want.

Is it shredded cornstalks or whole cornstalks? I don't think it would hurt but if it is whole stalks it could be very messy to work with.

Remember one thing, corn stalks are good hiding place for slugs.

Whole or shredded? If they are whole then they would be a great place for fungus and other nasty things to hang out. And even shredded I wouldn't do it. Are these from sprayed fields? What kinds of chemicals did they use? As the corn breaks down would it pull nitrogen out of my soil? It might be a better idea to use the corn, (if shredded) in walkways to cut down on weeds.
