I made the huge mistake of buying Mexican Evening Primrose last year. I didn't make an informed decision because I didn't know how quickly these things spread and I certainly didn't know these are the cockroaches of the plant kingdom and can probably withstand a nuclear attack.
Anyway, I've been spraying them with RoundUp and pulling them up. I generally get out to do this daily. I'm very concerned because of the whole underground tubular root system-- will I ever be able to totally get rid of these things?
I canm't believe one of our garden departments had these things for sale. They're horrible little beasts that are actually beginning to encroach upon our lawn. Yuck.
Destroying Mexican Evening Primrose
instead of spraying with round up try 2,4-d, which is a broad leaf killer.also add to that a spreader sticker which will help the plant absorb it better. Be sure to mix it as directed, cause if you don't all you will be doing is killing the foliage but fertilizing the roots. I am not sure what the temp is there but if it is lower then 50 and higher then 85 spraying won't work well. Don't spray every day, you need to let the chemical get absorbed and do its work. Give it a week or so inbetween spraying. If you see is starting to wilt let it go a few days. the more foliage there is the better the chemical will get absorbed. Good luck!
Thanks so much, Barbara. I forgot to mention that these things are in a garden with some mature plants that I really love. Do you think that the method that you suggested will allow me to be specific to those stupid primrose plants?
2, 4-d will kill your other plants too so you'll need to be just as careful with it as you would with Roundup. If you have things really crowded together, you can always use a paintbrush or something similar to apply it just to the plants you want to kill.
Thanks so much! I will be very careful! Enjoy your weekend!
Good luck Becky!
