Due to storm damange, I had trees removed from an existing bed. With all the machinery and chaos, and them hauling away debris, a lot of my good soil and mulch went bye bye.
Problem is, my mail order plants came in, and I'd like to get them into the ground ASAP (especially b/c knee surgery might be in my future, so it'll be hard to do it then). There's way too much area for me to haul and add soil and enrichments myself. I'll need to pay someone to do it, but the next availability is at least a week.
Any advice on what to do? The remaining soil isn't bad, just not as deep and loamy as I'd like. It has been a bit compacted over the years. I thought of adding the plants and then having the additions dumped on top since the plants will mostly be working on roots. I think the soil underneath will be sufficient. But then I worry the plants will be too deeply buried.
Thanks so much in advance. This is driving me nuts!
Adding soil/compost/mulch to existing bed
I'd wait and have the soil done properly before you plant--there's a saying that you should always dig a $10 hole for a $1 plant (or something along those lines) so assuming these are permanent things like shrubs, perennials, etc then I'd wait a week and do things right. If the knee surgery gets in the way, you could always pay the people doing the soil to plant them for you too.
Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Spent too much money on these little guys to risk killing them off right away.
