room for a small japanese maple?

Olathe, KS

I see many types/sizes of Japanese Maples in my neighborhood and I love the way they look! I am in zone 5b. I have a 5' by 5' area on the west side of my home that could use something with a little height. It is a corner where the west wall of my home meets my privacy fence. I have noticed some people planting some types of Japanese Maples very close to their homes, but someone told me that 5 by 5 would not be enough. Does anyone know of a specific JM that would thrive in a small area?

Dwarf Japanese Maples are well suited to small gardens with limited space, along with rock gardens and container gardens.

A local nursery would be able to tell you which ones do best in your area.

I have what I believe is a Garnet Japanese Maple in a protected area by my house. The tag did not have a name, just threadleaf Japanese Maple. It said it would get to 8 x 8 ft when fully grown. We have had it for approx 15 years now. I do keep it pruned to 5 ft wide since that is all the space we have for it. It is about 6ft tall now.

This picture was taken in 2004, it keeps trying to grow over my sidewalk. The Rose of sharon is now gone and the tree is much happier without it. It is very easy to keep trimmed to any size you like. I like mine with about 12 inches clearance on the bottom ... i like the weeping look and my cat loves to hide under the tree in the shade. Many people in the neighborhood trim theirs a lot more.
