Can asperagus be grown in a small space?

Grand Forks, ND(Zone 4a)

My family loves asparagus and I would like to try growing some. Problem is is that I have a small yard and have to work our veggies into my flower beds and pots. Suggestions? I have access to farmland, but its about an hour and a half from where I live. Can it be planted and forgotten for extended periods of time?

I live in zone 4 and my land is in zone 3.

I wasn't around to see or taste the final results, but a friend of mine used to grow asparagus in a large pot ( maybe 5 gal), and it always looked healthy.

I planted 2nd year asparagus roots 3/3/08 in a 3x9 ft raised bed ( 1"x4" boards made into a box filled with (originally) local soil ; compost and mulch added over a couple of years) When I prepared the bed before planting I amended it with fireplace ash, lime, manure {store-bought bags} and soil perfector (Helps break up our clay soil). I dug trenches 12" deep, added 2" mushroom compost or manure, 2" top soil, planted the 21 roots spaced about a foot apart in six 3 ft long rows, added top soil to cover and covered everything with straw as a mulch and watered for about an hour. The following year I had some asparagus but wasn't sure how much to cut so I harvested sparingly. This year I have had a great crop starting in April and last night harvested what I think will be the last of it. There are just 2 of us and we've had it 5 or 6 times in about a month. I've heard the bed will produce for as much as 10 or 20 years. Let the ferns grow all summer. I cut them down in late winter. They are especially pretty in the fall when they turn golden brown. If you can find the space they require almost no care other then adding compost or mulching yearly and occasional supplemental watering if there's not enough rain and you notice the soil is extra dry.
