I have lots of buds on my EA, but leaves are very sparse. I've read pruning is not necessary and wonder if there;'s anything I should do to increase foliage. I live in Zone 6 and EA was planted last spring.
Encore Azalea - purple flower
I have one that is the same way.Mine is blooming. I am going to treat mine with Bayer Advanced All-In-One Rose & Flower Care. You can read about it at Bayer.com.
Then I can assume the problem is disease? Have you ever pruned your Encore Azalea? I was wondering if the leaf shortage on my EA had to do with the zone I was in? The EA I have is the only one mentioned for zone 6A, all others say zone 7?
carots, I'd say if you have lots of buds you don't have a disease problem. I think EA's are just like that in certain climates. I also live in zone 6A and mine seem to have lost a lot of leaves during the winter but are coming back just fine. Mine are also only a year old (or less)
Doug
I have lots of azaleas, including one Encore, and they all drop approximately 1/3 to half of their leaves during the winter. All the ones I have put on their blooms and then, as the blooms fade, they begin to put on their new leaves for the current year. All of my azaleas are several years old.
Thanks for replies. EA is looking pretty with all the blooms so I will hope for more leaf growth!
