Best equipment/setup for sowing seed?

Should I use plastic flats? Cardboard pots? Do I use soil, or those weird semi-solid coconut husk substrates?

You can start seeds in basically any type of container. I've even started them in ziploc sandwich bags on the window sill.
You need a seed starting mix for the soil.
