Can anyone tell me when I should transplant my sunflowers to outdoors. I started to germinate the seeds in peat pots indoors as of one week ago today. How big should the new sprouts be to safely transplant them? It is my first attempt at planting sunflowers. By the way they are called "Lemonade" mix. They are a hybrid sunflower. Thanks!!!

Plant out when roots begin to show through the wall of the peat pot. This will insure a good root system. Tear away the top portion of the peat pot and bury the pot making sure no portion is above the soil line. I usually try to peel away as much of the pot as possible. If any portion remains above the soil the sun will wick away the moisture and kill the roots growing through the pot wall.
I don't expect your outdoor temperatures will be too much of a shock for them, but you will need to adjust them gradually to higher light levels outdoors before you plant them. When you think they're about large enough that you're going to want to plant them, start off by putting them outside in a shady spot, then each day let them get a little bit more sunlight until they're getting as many hours of sun as they will be when they're in your garden. If you take them from indoors straight to full sun outside it could kill them or at the very least sunburn them badly.
Thanks for all your help!!!
i tried them in peat pellets they got too long and lanky. i bought those little ounce pots put dirt in them and planted them like that. they did so much better. wasnt lanky at all. i started some in a pot outside the other day and they are up. im in sc so yours should be fine.
