I bought 2 Salvia Hot Lips plants from the Burpee web site last spring. The website says they are perennials but the branches are dead and I don't see any new growth. Does anyone know much about these plants. They did really well all summer long. Beautiful and fragrant. We had a really bad winter with 4 feet of snow which is very unusual for Maryland. Could the snow have killed the plants??
I am also wondering if I should yank them out and buy new ones or just leave them in and wait a little longer.
Thanks for your help.
Salvia Hot Lips: Annual or Perennial?
I think they should be hardy in your area in a normal winter, but with a really bad winter maybe not. Snow wouldn't have killed the plants (it can actually help insulate & protect them) but if you had much colder temperatures than normal that could have killed them. Or if you cut them back before winter, salvias have hollow stems and can rot over the winter if water (or melted snow) gets down into the stems. I'd wait a little longer though before you give up on them, if it is just cold damage they could still send up some new growth.
