what plants are best for me?

Toms River, NJ

I have an apartment patio that is mainly shady, with one really sunny spot. What plants are good for beginners, but thrive in the shade? Any suggestions would help.

Coleus are sooooo easy to grow and love the shade, can also handle morning sun. Mine do wonderful in containers.
Begonias and impatiens are fairly easy shade loving flowers.

Im interested in a little bit of everything just to get my feet wet. I would like to see some perenial flowers and some annuals. Im also into kitchen herbs. Since I do have a patio I do believe containers would be best, lol. Im looking into window boxes to put on the railing as well.

hostas do good in contrainers

I was going to suggest hostas, too. There are so many wonderful minis, and even the very large hostas do well in containers if given room to grow. They're not difficult to over-winter, either. Keep them reasonably dry (they don't like to be wet over the winter when they're dormant) and they should come back reliably year after year.

Nicotiana alata ( Flowering Tobacco) is a nice aromatic plant in various colors and Torenia fournieri ( Wishbone flower) a prolific bloomer here in the hot, humid south.
