RE: Bay Leaf Tree

Wilmington, DE

I purchased a bay leaf tree, what is the best place to plant it in our yard? I read many posts that it's best to keep it indoor in the winter but I want to plant it outside... We had one bay leaf tree in France where I grew up and it did very well outside. It got big and never suffered during winter.

Thanks

Unfortunately for you, winters in France are quite a lot warmer than winters in Delaware. Assuming this is the bay leaf tree you're talking about http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/814/ it will not survive a Delaware winter outdoors. It should be perfectly happy outdoors in the warmer months, but you will need to bring it inside for the winter.

I bought my Bay tree in NC 2 years ago, I planted it in a pot and during the winter I moved it indoors but with enough light, and it did well. I keep it trimmed as a topiary and when I use the leaves for cooking I just pull some leaves off and let them dry in my pantry before using them for cooking otherwise the flavor will be too intense. Now I moved to south Florida and I brought it with me and it's doing great, I even have a new plant out of it.

I have had a Bay Leaf plant in front of my dining room window and it is so handy to have such an abundence of leaves to use. The more I cut off branches to share, the more it grows. One problem that I have been concerned about; the lower leaves always seem to have a lot of moisture on them. Am I watering too much? Once a month I have been giving the plant a rinsing under the kitchen sink spayer. Is that OK? I would hate to lose this plant, I love to make chicken soup.
