When will my Purple Heart come back?

Clover, SC

Hey guys- I am pretty clueless about anything gardening just FYI. LOL I planted some Purple Heart plants last spring. The did great all spring/summer. The died off in the fall/winter. It was one of our coldest winters on record. I live in the charlotte NC area. They still look like a dead mess. Will they come back and if so, when? Thanks in advance for your help!

I was just coming here to post the very same question! Also look forward to hearing the answer to this one.

Unfortunately it's hard to say for sure whether something will come back or not--all you can do is wait and be patient. It's also equally hard to predict when they'll start to show signs of life--it depends partly on what type of plant it is (some are naturally slower to get moving in the spring than others) and how badly it was damaged (something that was on the brink of death and barely survived will take a bit longer to put out new growth than something that was just nipped by frost) I've had cold damaged plants on occasion wait until May or June to start showing signs of life. I don't know what zone you're in--Plant Files lists these as hardy to zone 8a so I'd say if you're in zone 8 and happened to have a zone 7-like winter then there's a decent chance they'd come back, but if you're in zone 7 where they'd already be borderline and you had a zone 6-like winter then it's more of a long shot. But plants can be surprisingly tough sometimes, so even if it's the odds are against it I wouldn't give up on them yet.

Just checking in on this topic. Shortly after my post I noticed 2 little purple sprouts coming up out of the ground! I was so excited to see them. Unfortunately, those are the only 2 I see- I was hoping for much more. The spring/summer is still young. I'll be patient.

Hey Jolie- have you see any life in yours yet?

Bridgette, I was so glad to see you'd posted you saw those 2 little purple sprouts coming up! I'm right behind you, also have 2 little purple sprouts that have just broken through the ground. Just the two, though (and I'd had a fair amount planted last year). Trying to be patient and hoping to see at least a few more in the coming weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed!

you guys are really lucky! Here in Idaho Purple Hearts are an annual. Very pretty and I love them, so I usually keep a cut stock in the winter to plant in the spring.
