Feeding Jalapeno Plants

I have a pair of Jalapeno plants in pots. They have been with me for at least 2 or 3 seasons. I bring them in during the winter and put them back outside during the spring. I was wondering what kind of fertilizer or plant food I should use to feed them. Is there an ideal size pot for these guys? The reason im asking is they are spindley and while they bloom and produce Jalapenos they never get that big. Any help is aprreciated.
