Question about peat pots....

Hayward, CA

Though I have been gardening for a decade or two, this is my first year of seriously trying to raise the abundance of my new plants for this year from seed. My question is regarding the 2.25" peat pots that I am using, and whether or not they need to be "up-planted" into a slightly larger container (quart-ish size), to let it further establish root before it goes in the ground.
I've heard mixed opinions about the 2.25" peat pots being too small to establish an appropriate root ball, while others leave them in them and let the plant get a few inches tall before they are planted out into the garden.

Thanks very much,

Norm, I do both, depending on the plant, mostly based on height. Things like tomatoes and flowers that get tall get moved up. Plants like marigolds get put straight into the ground as is. I've also just used a tray with a 2 inch lip and added dirt around the peat pots as a sort of holding place that i can water. The roots do spread into the soil but I'm able to gently tease them apart before they go in the ground. Experiment, half of the fun of growing from seeds. Good luck! Cathy

I am leaving my tomatoe plants in the small peat pots because I have run out of both space and time for repotting them. If you buy plants they are usually kept in smaller containers too.
