Betty, I started sunflowers in the house last year they were leggy too when i got them outdoors, I supported them up with a coat hanger and they did fine, until the squirrels took every flower off, wont be planting those again...
M it rained here off and one one day then all night I think tuesday, well lets just say that wasn't enough rain at all.. I water everyday infact today i watered in the morning and again about 5:30. My pots are fine, but the ground is just so dry, some parts of the garden the dirt is cracking so you know its thirsty..
Today was a beautiful day, 80 degrees and the sun just shined.. I planted the last of my seeds in pot today all done now till my annual garden is ready.. Had another canna come up today, and i think the rest grew half an inch today alone.. Hubby vacuumed the pool today, wow it needed it so bad.. Other then that didn't do much today, just sat out and enjoyed the day

What's Happening in your neck of the woods? Friends...
Looks as though Thunder Bay will have yet another RAINLESS day today. We did have a couple of pockets that flew through overnight .. but .. like jen says .. the ground just sucked it up and you'd think nothing had fallen !!
The perennials are slowly peeking out thoug thanks to watering can efforts LoL
The Bleeding Heart is bolting, and the Pig Squeak has lovely flowers in amongst it's huge leaves.
The DANDILIONS are flourishing too ^_^
Guess the order of the day will be yard work of some sort or another today .. maybe a dump run ..
OOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo .. we have TICKS :-( Was petting Lilly yesterday and felt ?something? in her fur around her neck .. it wasn't attached .. so .. I pulled it out, let out the loudest most horrifying YELP, dropped the Tick, scared the beejebbers out of Lilly RAN to the closet and grabbed the vacuum and vacuumed the carpet where IT dropped for 5 minutes at least !!! THEN, I sprayed the area with RAID. As most of you know .. i H A T E .. bugs !!! And here I live in the woods !!!!
Have a wonderful day everyone
~M~
"M" had plans for today, outside work and here it's lightly raining and thundering, poor Sailor, yikes she's hidding under anything she can get under! Wanted to start that flower shed today, been saying that for a month and it's always something, either rain, cold windy weather, away and here I am, tools all gathered and it's raining so guess it's an inside day today...do have a small rag quilt ready to sew together, a swap quilt block, 1/2 an afghan to sew together so I'm not shy of something to do...just finished filling all the hummingbird feeders just incase..had my coffee on back deck, lordy it's pretty when things are starting to bloom and grass has been cut..reminds you of what you dreamed about all winter long...
Ooh ticks, Greg my eldest had a tick a few years back and was quite ill..they really are dangerous....only bugs I had here last night while cutting the grass was a few blackflies..yikes they can bite can't they
Know you don't want rain on a weekend but if you need it, hope you get it..was watching weatherman early this a.m. and he said could have more snow in some of your areas...wow, we were dancing the happy dance in March with all that glorious weather, now it's back and we don't want....
Enjoy your day!
Its rained her every weekend for the last 3, only off and on rain but finally last night we got a good down poor, everything is still wet, and there calling for more...
jen
Torrential rains here today, lordy, been a long time since I heard thunder this loud..went into town trying to find copper tubes, no go, dropped into Home Depot to see if they might have them, nope but they did have a nice geranium hanging basket that wanted to come home along with some bonemeal...not as large as I normally put in the garden frame but it will do until I get get to Orangeville in the next week or two for all the hanging baskets...
Looked as though the sun was going to peep out, went out for no more than 5 minutes and drats, downpour again..need to go get changed so I don't catch a chill..
Keep saying, we do need rain!!!
W I N D !!!! Boy oh boy do we have THAT here .. so much so that the garden furniture (Chairs) have gone topsie turvie .. and I thought they were HEAVY ..
Trees are swaying .. just not nice to be outside ..
Lorna did some trimming today !!! Mind, I was her balance .. she did quite well I must say ^_^
Have the WOODSTOVE on .. that's how ferocious the wind is .. the temps have taken a BIG dive from 15C to about 10C !!!!
Feel bad for the nesting birds ..
Am online in a search for a female WESTIE puppy .. Lilly's breeder will have NONE for a year .. since Lilly is now 3 .. we feel we would like to introduce a pup now ..
Difficult in this area fer sure ,, looking at the US ..
Take care all
~M~
Nice sunny day again but chilly wind.
Over to Joanna Banana's to pick up a few annuals. She always seed s hugh amounts and then sells what she does not need for her own containers. Also got a Sungold cherry tomato.Had one last year and they were very tasty.
On the way home decided to stop in at Greengate Garden Centre nearby. I dont start buying plants until next week but figured I might as well see what they had in. They have changed the line up of the shelving units that hold the plants and it is horrible, some going one way some the other instead of just being able to go up one and down the other ... Anyway I spotted a neat fountain but it was a touch expensive. Went to the front to ask if my hort society discount applied, chatting with the owner. She said Carol you might do better wth the scratch and save card ( I didnt pick one up) biggest discount 25%! So I decided to take a chance and guess what- got the25% discount - which was $100 off! So the staff loaded the thing in the back seat of my car where it still resides because it is concrete and so heavy I cant pick it up! But got the site already for it and figured out the interior workings - I think! It is in the shape of a giant mushroom with a big leaf on top and 3 little frogs, one of which is a spitter. Water also comes up thru the middle and there is a light.
Then a friend came over to install two new ceiling lights for me, one in the kitchen the other in the TV room replacing lights I put in 15 and 20 years ago. Just needed a change. Bought the lights over a year ago and never got around to getting them installed! The kitchen is a Canadian Tire Tiffany.
WOW that is a good discount.. I would of had to have it too its just beautiful..
OMG lucky you, it's beautiful..did you have a garden in mind to set it in? nothing like listening to a water feature...
I especially like the stained glass lamp as I'm partial to stained glass...I'm a Canadian Tire shopper as well..they've great deals especially in the lighting dept.
How wonderful for them to let you open your scratch and win prior to purchasing your item..here you have to take a chance at the % off when at the till..must have made your day..
"M" Lorna just couldn't stay out of the garden could she..lol..gets in your blood..Westie, are they black? always get confused with my brothers' dogs..
Wow talk about a downpour yesterday..up early, was going out to do that garden shed I want so bad, sky is so heavy that I imagine we're in for another day of rain so not quite sure what I'll do ...might be another 'next weekend project'...
Getting some pretties though...
Went back to look at your fountain..it's too adorable..now I know exactly where I could put it..care to share!
Coffee in hand it's time to do something..hid all my seeds I took off my plants last fall and can't for the life of me remember where I put them..off to search, now that the ground is soft it would be a good time to put them into the ground and come what may...
I did tell you I got 2 boomerang continuous bloom lilac trees..be interesting to see what they do...
ANOTHER .. dry and sunny day here .. water bombers flying over are now quite common ..
Carol .. that fountain is just plain awesome ^_^
Every year I 'think' about doing a water feature, they're so popular now. Would have to do a bit more research. I know the water is recycled constantly .. so no worries re our well ..
Betty .. Lilly is white .. West Highland White Terrier .. Westie for short .. I know EVRYONE who has a dog thinks theirs is THE best .. but .. when we purchased Lilly, we truly did purchase a little angel .. she is such a good dog .. which is why we are on the search for another. Feel bad that her breeder will not be offering pups for a year.
Gonna go outside and try and keep Lorna out of trouble !!
~M~
Betty here is a shot of where it sits - at the moment. This is just beside the side gate into the back yard. I had a millstone fountain there but for various resons was not happy with that. Last year I trimmed back about half of that Mugo Pine and at the moment have some Ladies Mantle in front of it but this will probably change. There is some Lamium around the edge of the bed where the fountain sits and some old Trollius behind which I may move as it might be hidden too much. Will wait until things start growing - need something low around the base too.
Marilyn I now have 4 fountains, actually I have two more, one I dont keep set up and the Millstone I removed which I will put on the other side of the front yard. I am restricted on where I can put them by the location of electrical outltets and how I can reasonably run extension cords! I like to have the running water, dont want to deal with a pond and the birds love to bath in the fountain I have in the back yard- it has a nice basin just right for them!+
Better go get cleaned up - I am working a shift at LH this afternoon. Going to try to remember my camera and get a picture now my blouse is all prettied up with lace.
When I get home I will try to get the new fountain running- I need help with it just because installing the pump/tubing etc means shifting the pieces a bit and they are really heavy.
Just love it Carol, will have to check the Garden Gallery here and see what they have similar..why is it wherever we don't want an outside plug that would be suitable for water features that's where it is..thankfully my brother ran underground cable to I could safely run the pond..should have him run a few other strands..
Raining off and on, softly but enough that you cannot play outside..
Finished my April swap block, did a lap afghan, my first for the seniors home at Christmas...think I'll aim for 20..it's 3:30 so I don't want to call it quits just yet...
"M" my brother has westies as well, would you like me to check on their breeder? they are his children, both are up around 9 now..I'll have to find photo to post for you..am sure they are not half as nice as Lily though..lol
Drats, Missy my kittie is having a great time bringing froggies to the door..yikes, not nice, 2 I've rescued, were quite lively, when I put them back into the pond they floated flat, could they be playing dead so the kittie won't try and get them again? know it's nature but I just don't like..guess with all the rain there's frogs galore out there for him to play with....
Good to see all that you are up to, I'm down with a cold. crappy weather too, windy cool and damp.
Betty I have a rain chain fountain out in my sitting area in the veggie garden. In order to run the fountain the pump cord is plugged into an extension cord which runs along the south fence 50 feet and is plugged into another extension cord which runs the rest of the way to the side fence then across to the gate. That plugs into a cord which runs under the bricks at the gate and BACK down along the house ( about 30 feet) to the outlet! All these extension cords stay in place year round and, fortunately, I can also use them for Xmas lights! And everything plugs into remote controls at the outlet so I can just turn them off and on from inside the house!
And, fortunatey, there is another extension cord running to the front from the other side of the house which is also used for Xmas lights so I can fix up the millstone fountain on that side of the yard!
Think we're all having about the same weatherwise...sorry to hear you aren't well..quite a few have colds/flu, guess it's the changes in weather...
Now it stops raining, too late to undertake anything outside so guess I'll look for a movie, get in my jammies and enjoy what is left of the weekend...
That's a lot of outdoor extensions..great that you can use them for Christmas lights..
because I had to run the underground electric cable about 100 ft. my brother said he'd do it so I didn't electricute myself...
He's coming back in the next few weeks to put a staircase on back bedroom deck, just maybe if I run some extensions here and there on the ground when I know he's coming he'll sh ake his head and get me organized..aren't I terrible..lol
Got to make a run to pick up dog food!
Love the Fountain Carol. I have one as well, but just can't bring myself to fill and start up yet. Don't know why; maybe because the weather is quite changeable this past week and cool, barely reaching our normals this time of year of 16-17 degrees. Have all the Begonias I started inside still. Hate to tempt fate with them. But the good thing about that is that I haven't been tempted to go out and buy annuals yet. Last year I learned my lesson with them spending the first couple weeks of May in the shed at night. My perennials are all coming along nicely, including the Black Barlow columbine that I thought I had lost. I had Sungold cherry tomatoes last year, and you are right; they are very tasty.
I have 2 fountains up and running the past 10 days or so.
Betty the other option was to bury one extension thru a tube of some sort, preferably metal from the fence over to the outlet ( still 30 feet or so along the fence!) but that meant burying it half under a flower bed with the risk of hitting it with shovel when planting) and then under the brick patio It is a long stretch but was the easy way out. Perhaps some day I can have it done properly - but probably not!
Sunny day here but cool wind, didnt work on the fountain after all.
We really needed this weekend, it has rained since last night off and on and now for the past 30 min its been a crazy down poor.. We really needed it thats for sure, hopefully it will make it north to reach some of you that also could use the rain.. Didn't do much of anything this weekend, moved a few cannas when i found out all one garden is just coming up weeds.. Since that was all that was there we moved them and we'll try killing the weeds first..
All your fountains are so pretty, I'm jealous we dont have one...
jen
Mornin ...
Envious of all the RAIN others are getting .. looking at the sky right now I am thinking there is a 50/50 chance we MIGHT get a 'sprinkle'
Sorry to hear about your cold Linda .. seasons chang, ergo, the bod responds .. could it be allergies as well ?
WELL .. me and my stories ~~ LOL ... yesterday Lorna got into her wheelchair .. I got her trimmer .. she started it and .. OFF she went !! She pushes herself BACKWARDS in the chair with her right leg . she trimmed for close to 2 hours .. the place looks wonderful !!! She let me try 'THE BEAST' but .. after I had made 2 sizeable SCALPS with the trimmer, she just said she'd do it ...
During all this, our neighbour .. kinda next door .. came over .. her hubby is handicapped just got a brand new electric wheelchair .. wants Lorna to have access to his old one .. soooooooooooo .. sometime today (or this week) Lorna will be mobilized .. this is ONLY on loan .. and Lorna will use it to do yard work .. she is still wearing her prosthetic leg daily, but, it's a bit unmanageable at this time, and, with her parents arriving for a 2 week visit on Mother's Day, well .. Lorna wants the property looking up to her standards ..
These chairs are VERY heavy, Carol (the neighbour) has a fully outiftted van with which to ferry her hubby about .. no way will this chair be able to be put into my trunk..
As an aside .. :( ... I have 'done' something' to my right foot .. either sprained the top of it, or, broken a bone .. I can still hobble, and, being a nurse is NOT a benefit .. I simply refuse to go to emerg .. I am THAT stubborn !! Am going to give it today to settle down before I start to make any moves .. I simply have NO time for a boo boo !!
Hope everyone has a super week
~M~
"M" now what would you insist we do, am sure it would be 'go to emergency as a precaution' right? that says it all..
It's Monday morning, will be a high of 20 and there is the sunshine..am sure the 2 days of rain has changed the green at least 3 deeper shades..did show 2 or 3 days this week of rain, hope it's during the week and keeps Mother's Day weekend sunny and hot...wouldn't want my boys to come do 'Mother'sDay chores' and not be able to..lol
Not sure what's happened, about a 6 inch band across my arms in red welt and I'm itchy all over..didn't do anything different, must have a reaction to something but not sure what it can be??? Paul has shingles and as I'm itching all over I'm thinking no not me...reading up on it says not, says it would only be on one side...
Love the water feature Don..you are wise with the changes in weather not to start planting too early..annuals are so costly it's a shame when frost gets them...glad your columbine made it..I planted columbine sees and they are doing ok..let's hope they survice long enough to make it outside..
Speaking of water features...I saw one in Buffalo each time I went (except the last time) made out of hollow tree sections..it was lovely, wanted one, never had my camera with me..last weekend I did and they had taken it down for the summer...friends have brought me parts of decayed trees to try one however with my brother Bernie coming to put stairs on back bedroom deck and my not knowing exactly where it will be I have to wait..my I have ideas in my noggin...kids tells me with the pond and other water features than I have too many..can one have too many?
Jen, you are most likely getting what we had all weekend..lordy what thunder and lightning and rain all night, got to tell you Miss Sailor was not happy...kept me awake good part of the night..
Well, guess I've typed long enough, get my crochet out lol as I'm on a mission re lap covers for seniors...
Gab later
Ya I'm sure thats what it is, its warm here today, hopefully with all that rain we'll get more flowers.. Spring is here and so is the rain :( but it was needed so i guess i'll take it... Yes the thunder was crazy last night, it was so loud...
Today the sun is out and I got off work early, hopefully hubby will BBQ tonight
jen
Good Morning...bright sunny day here and lots to do. Here is another site thought you might be interested. Hope you all have a great day!
www.gardenersgardening.com
Thanks for the site, already in saved...going to check it out, one can't have too much garden info now can they...
I can see blue sky but seems as though clouds are moving in, it's 11 here this morning but it's still early in the day..think they are calling for high of 20
Windy here! The winds were so loud last night sometimes it sounded like thunder!
A bit of rain and snow last evening and now it has started to snow again very lightly, supposed to be more! Darn this is my week to go plant shopping - now I have decided to stay home and do someting else instead. Not nice to be out.
The dogs and I are again back to school- rally obedience. A novice class this time ( she puts me in whatever class she wants to even out numbers!) last week the show leash I was using kept slipping off so I just started working off leash and the same this week, holding a treat in my hand- sure focuses their attention.I figure if they can do it off leash they can do it on. Am beginning to think I might trial them this summer if they will be inside.
Because of the deafness I use mostly hand signals and a lady came up to me after class- she has an elderly dog at home - and said how watching me work had reinforced for her the importance of using hand signals from the time they are young. She also -in class- complimented me on their beautiful coats and was quite shocked when I told her they had not had a bath or been brushed for 3 months!
Cannot believe you are still getting snow, imagine you can't believe it as well..will it ever end!!! Just think Carol, you can dream about all the plants you want for another week or two..
Sounds as though you have a lot to offer the class, maybe it's something your should persue????
Yikes, you've just reminded me that Sailor should be going for grooming..love the border collie but hair needs lots of upkeep...
You mean like I should teach? No thanks!
Since I retired I do volunteer work and I have learned for instance that I dont do well in a situation where I have to committ to a specific time/day every week.I need to be able to say yes or No to whatever task is at hand.
Snowing a lot now but the roads and sidewalks will most likely stay clear - too warm to collect but the lawn already has a light layer. Some pansies I got from Jo. still out in the shed - might go out and fix up the little planters I will put them in.
The rest of the plants and several pots of bulbs are all in the porch- will be happy when I can get the pots out on the patio, they take up a lot of room and I will need it when I start buying.
Lots and Lots of snow today, started about 715 this am and hasn't stopped. Wind is blowing and drifts are forming. I hope this gets the ash borer we are having trouble with. With any luck they will have come out during our nice week and have not rolled around as no leaves yet.
I have all my heat matts on in the G house hoping that my temp will stay warm enough after I cover with bubble wrap!
Back to work for me!.
Ann
Unbelievable Ann..it's dropped 5 degrees in the last couple of hours..I'd best not complain after what you are all having..you won't lose your greenhouse plants now will you?
Carol, looks as though you've done the teaching bit and now you are ready to take on just what you wish to take on..great life isn't it?
Darn right Betty!
I think I am enjoying life more now at 70 than I ever did befor except if somebody could just deal with the joint aches..........!
YIKES .. again .. ?something? made me lose a whole post .. rats ...
Am attaching a pic of Lorna on her NEW toy !! She purchased a riding mower today that is easily accessible for her .. so far she has been out cutting grass for 2 hours !!!
Prior to that she was trimming from the electric wheelchair we have been lent .. she is SO happy ^_^
Whishing, hoping and praying for ANY kind of moisture !!!!
~M~
Very Cool lawn tool! Too bad we don't live closer!
Here she is again with a big smile, so good to see.
Ann
Lorna's smiles LIGHT up the world .. am so fortunate to have her in my life .. she inspires me above and beyond ..
Just spoke to a bud in Calgary .. she is so ripped with the weather .. like you, Carol, she said the wind about scared her to death with the noise it made ..
We have yet ANOTHER promise of rain overnight and into tomorrow .. I guess we can hope ..
Did plant some pansies today .. pretty hearty lil beasties ^_^
My Day Lillies are a goner .. ?something? ate them .. I was SICK when I saw them missing .. obviously whatever feasted on them didn't like Peonies or Bleeding Heart !!! SO enjoy living in the country, but, the wildlife will make ya nuts !!!!!
My right foot is looking 'odd' ... we all thought perhaps I had a Tick bite as now I have a raised white bump surrounded by red .. sorta like what a mosquito bite would look like, but LOTS bigger .. gonna do some research tonight ..
At least I can walk without pain today .. THAT is a good thing ^_^
Off I go
~M~
Snow! You guys really have my sympathy with the crazy weather you are going thought. ~M~ I hope you do get some rain. We've got sun on the south side of the house and black clouds with hail and thunder on the north side.
Had some excitement with Cooper yesterday, he was choking on something, I thought is was piece of his orange rubber ball, did the Heimlich maneuver a few times, reached down his throat to his vocal cords... he was breathing but obviously distressed, drooling heavily, frantic. Grabbed my neighbour to drive us to the vet, they did xrays but couldn't see anything, until one tech saw something way back in his throat. Wedged behind his upper teeth, partially obstructing his airway was a stick. It was stuck cross ways in his throat, about 3" long and as big or bigger than a pencil. Once they saw it, they got it out. Cooper was immediately fine.
Glad Cooper is OK - that is pretty scarey
Yep this weather is the pits and apparently another day at least if not more. Only bonus is the moisture. The dogs didnt even much want to go out into the yard so I dont feel guilty about not walking them!
Good grief Linda .. talk about a MAJOR scare !!! Thank heaven the tech saw the stick and Cooper is OK.
Will keep that in my 'memory log' of 'just in cases' as Lilly is a stick lover too ..
We got a BIT of rain overnight, not much, but I think it may have sprinkled for about an hour .. could hear it hitting the tables on the patio. More is predicted for today .. but .. when I look at the radar .. I see zippety doo da on the radar.
Probably swimming today, and have a few other things to tend to in the city as well ..
Take care
~M~
Morning, omg Linda, how frantic you must have been, thank goodness for neighbors...how's Cooper doing today? Sailor never goes after sticks, her pet enjoyment is balls...
Jen, saw on the weather forecast that you are in for bad stormy weather today, ..we had rain during the night, right now it's sunshine and 17, it's been great for the gardens though..we're expecting 60% rain later this afternoon... just looked at our local weather, where they said we'd have rain both Sat. & Sun. now they say only Sat. let's hope the front moves through and it's sunshine both days..nothing would be nicer for Mother's Day..
Came home yesterday and had 2 swap boxes waiting for me..both were filled with treasures...in my fat quarter swap box was the most beautiful yellow/blue co-ordinating materials, now have to decide exactly what I want to make with them..
"M" enjoy your swim..if we get more rain I'll send it your way..
