growing poppies from seed

Carson City, NV(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know if one can grow poppies from the poppy seed one buys at the grocery store? Is the seed treated in such as way as to render it sterile? Thanks

Thanks for the info. Apparently I wouldn't get the bright red fringed flowers I want.

The poppy seeds that are sold as spice are somniferum poppies? That's interesting to know. Years ago you could buy somniferum poppy seed at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. If I'm not mistaken he was the first to cultivate them in the new world. I think they got a stick up their astilbe and stopped selling them some time back!
