Wandering Jew

Cleveland, GA

I'm not sure exactly where to put this, but as I am a beginner and this is a houseplant, here goes :) I recently rooted a fallen piece of wandering jew that my DD picked up at Lowe's. I didn't even think it would survive, but it has grown a LOT in just a week or two, and yesterday, it BLOOMED! I've never seen this before! I'm so excited and just had to share :)

Congratulations! I am a rookie and until this year, I have never known a Wandering Jew to be able to bloom. Since then, I have had two of my jews and my puple heart bloom and it looks like my Moses in a whatever is going to go, too! I love this family of plants and yesterday I became the proud owner of a white velvet Wandering Jew! I just love him! Happy Gardening!

I just got a purple heart wandering jew Sat. It's in a 4" pot right now. It came with some white yarrow in the pot with it? Don't know what the yarrow is.
I've been wondering where to put my new plant and what kind of container.
It has one pink bloom on it. It closes at night and opens again in morning. Neat.

I read it is real easy to propagate. Just stick in soil?

Cleveland, GA

That's what I did! I had to snip off a couple leaves, and those rooted too! Super easy to propagate.

Loving, what did you do to get it to bloom? I, too, pilfer HD & Lowes for poor pieces of forgotten wandering jews and whatever else I can grown. And I have a couple of 4" pots of nothing but cuttings I've found. They are growing but now flowering. Whats the secret?

Cleveland, GA

Honestly, I have no idea! I keep it watered and moist, and I mist it on occasion. Other than that, nothing! I have a hanging basket FULL of cuttings of another type of wandering jew and I've had it longer and done the same things, but it has not bloomed. So I'm not sure :/

Mama_San, do you think you might be able to part with a small piece of your white velvet jew(if it's big enough, of course), maybe for postage or a trade? lol Thanks!

Love the wandering jew family I have currently 4 different kinds. (notice i said currently) I am waiting for a few different colors. Lol.

Yes, they are easy to grow. Just snip and stick in soil. Make sure the soil stays moist and they grow. Real easy.

Here's my new one. I just planted it in this pot. Hope it does good. It came with another plant in it called white yarrow? So I planted them together. This spot it's hanging gets morning sun. Will that be ok?
Thanks, Elizabeth

Try to give it at least 6 hours of sun. Mine has indirect light all day and it is a beautiful purple. Very bright is best to get the nice purple color. In dim light will become a green or green with purple edges leaf. It's a beautiful plant when you get it going. I will have to take a pic of mine in a hanging basket. You will love it.

Does anyone have any ideas on this Tradescantia? It doesn't really look like any I've seen before.

Hey chickie! I also have this Jew and I am not sure of the species. What do you think of Tradescantia sillamontana? It looks the most like mine, maybe its yours, too? Have you checked the mail loving? I haven't checked mine yet- I have a LONG driveway! I am going to take a walk soon. Yours is getting ready to bloom! They are so pretty. Mine has been going for a month or more and no signs of slowing! Let me know on the identification. And the mail!=)

Cleveland, GA

Nothing in the mail today :( How about yours? lol As for the Tradescantia, I don't think that's it. Mine isn't as furry on the leaves, just the stems.

Nothing here, so far. But its only 2 here and I have no idea when the mail comes, because I can't even see my mailbox! lol Anyway, I really hope that your box comes tomorrow. Because if it doesn't I am going to have to stomp down there and complain, and probably freak out on someone who has nothing to do with it, and then I will feel bad and it won't make your box come any sooner....j/j =) Well, sort of! I will work a little more on your Tradescantia, try to figure it out. I guess we will shoot for tomorrow! Thanks again!

It kinda looks like a Tradescantia 'Baby Bunny Bellies'. can't tell for sure.

When I got married almost 13 years ago, I could not grow anything to save my life. My aunt gave me several pieces of her Jew, not sure what kind, it is just purple and does flower. When we bought our house I took it out of the pot and planted along the front of my house, it dies back every winter and comes back in the spring, this year I pulled some up and put it in a pot so I don't have to miss it this winter. I did remeber to bring it in tonight, the first real freeze of the winter. I get to enjoy it inside for a while, I may put it in a hanging basket and keep some inside for a while. I am getting too many babies in my house to take care of, I can't remeber where all I have them when its time to water everything, they seem to be everywhere. I also have 3 ivys inside and several others. We had 2 deaths in the family this year and it seems that I am the only one who knows how not to kill things now so all the plants from one of the funeral came here and 2 from the other came too. I told everyone no one can die for a while, I don't have anymore places to put plants.

I am thinking about putting some of my Jew around one of my rubber plants. Does anyone know if they can grow in the same pot?

scarletsmiles:

From the description of your "Wandering Jew", it sounds like the Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart':

I don't see why you couldn't try using it as a ground cover beneath your ficus tree, it will be pretty trailing from the pot.

Thanks, that might just stop the cat from digging in the dirt around the bottom, she already kill one rubber tree.
