Spring is here.....what made it, what didn't?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my neighbor will not give up on any azalea .... and they usually spring back for her

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would replace them, but find a spot to baby them with some tlc.

Thomaston, CT

They like acid soil...maybe some Miraclegro?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

noticed a red bud did not do well although there are shots coming from the base -and a yellow smoke bush (to tied to look up the name) is leafing out only from the middle of the tree.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Well I did cut out the dead branches and added some acidifier, so I'll give them one last chance to put out some new growth. I am impulsive, so if I see a gorgeous replacement I may just buy it. Right now I am trying to curb my spending. And I hate to give up on anything!

Hi Debilu! Did I see your cobalt car at Gro-More last week?
I am still waiting for the Astilbe order to come.I will go on the 14th w/GF.
Hope they are in by then.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi JoAnn
You may have seen my car, I'm there almost every week! Besides the plants, they have the best half moon cookies which I can't seem to avoid when I go.

It was you then. I tried to find you but you must have been checking out.
I had ordered some Ostrich Plume astilbes from Bonnie. I have been in everyweek too but no astils yet. I'm going to get my annuals on the 14th and if Astils arent in yet I will go elsewhere. I saw some at Oriental Garden but no one around to wait on me.
They really are a JM wholesaler so walk in traffic takes a chance at not being served and when you are talking to someone they always have half an eye on what they were doing when I interrupted them.
You need to be highly motivated to go there.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My sister will be here and wants to go Monday, so I'll check out some annuals then too. Where is Oriental Garden?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

http://www.orientalgardensupply.com/
They really are in the wholesale business and oriental garden design. Its best to phone(if they will answer) and let them know you're comming.
Dropins are OK but iffy they will be available to help.

My niece takes me to Wayside sometimes....they have nice plants....OK, so it's near Lollipop Farm, where I must go, but kills me to see all those dogs not adopted!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

that's where we got our dog

Thomaston, CT

Yes, & she's a doll! Doug wanted to bring home a small female G. shep that had been abused, but now I'm glad we didn't....I couldn't handle 3 dogs.

Debilu - I got a nice surprise today when I saw that your sweet woodruff from our RU was full of pretty little flowers. Kathy's painted fern is also springing to life, along with Marilyn's and JoAnn's hosta and Celeste's red daylily. It's so nice to have so many new friendship gardens filled with DG friends' plants!! Very cool! Thank you all for the lovely plants you share!

It must be cold up where you are Louise.

Thats DD's garden.Inherited from former owners.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yes, JoAnn, it has been pretty chilly still, and it will be down in the 30s at night for the next few days. I did get my new astilbe in today....Montgomery and another red one I can't think of right now. Everything else has to wait out the 30s.

When we left so soon after planting the RU plants (those that were intended for me and those that were left after the plant swap) I was worried that I wouldn't see a lot of them make it through the winter. But I have now confirmed that all of them made it except Kathy's Harison's yellow rose. It is just several branches of little thorns. I'm not giving up on it yet, but it doesn't look good for it. Debilu's heritage raspberries are all filling out and Bill's angelina and cauticola sedum, Harper's shasta daisies, Celeste's Japanese primrose, lupine, scarlet monarda and columbine, JoAnn's fall aster have joined the ranks of the happy campers in their new home! I tagged them all with little copper tags with everyone's names on them, and I still have more to explore and find in other gardens as well.

Bill - I'm also happy to report that Bud survived the winter with his eyelashes in tact and only his kerchief got faded and worn. Sadly, his earring has disappeared though. I'm sure it was stolen for its pawn value. Since Hank watches Pawn Stars, I'll make sure he keeps his eyes open for it! LOL
