Is it just me, or is the garden talk forum gone? Well, I'll just ask it here then...
I planted (about 4 years ago) 2 blue spruce trees that were about 5 feet tall, in a peat container. I mean I planted the trees in the ground, but from the garden store, the trees were in those peat-pot looking containers. The instructions said to slit the pots in 2 or 3 places and plant the whole thing in the ground. This was back when I was still stupid about gardening. I would have taken them out of the pots if I had bought them today. My question is, has anyone else planted trees in those big peat-pots and how has it worked out? Mine are very healthy and are growing just fine, but one of them is growing faster than the other...and that may just be natural. I worry about when they get older and taller...thinking that the roots may be winding around inside those pots, not spreading out and a big wind may knock them over. I'm not going to dig them up at this point, but I was just curious about what anyone else has experienced.
Where's the "Garden Talk" forum?
it's not gone:) not enough coffee this morning Jon??? hehe
I don't drink coffee...maybe that's the problem?...lol
I moved this thread to Garden Talk.
Ah...here it is...lol
hey,martyboy1;Welcome to the 'Garden Talk Forum'. Glad that you have found it....finally.hehe
Ok, now could someone please answer my "other" question, above?
I have never really planted trees this way, but I would think if you made cuts down the sides and at the bottom, the roots will grow out through and spread and continue to grow. When I plants seeds in those peat pots,I'm very carefull and try to cut most of the bottom off so the roots can grow better. If the trees are doing good,I would mess with them at all. They must like what ever you did. Just give plenty of water the first couple of years after planting.Don't forget about watering during the winter months as well.
One thing that worried me was the fact that I've seen annuals I raised from seed get very twisted up in just those flimsy peat pots. The one for these trees is about 1/2" thick. I hope the trees have grown their roots into the pot and out of it. I can't remember if they were pot-bound when I planted them, but I don't think they were.
