night time temperatures

I have LOTS of seedlings (lots of annuals, tomatoes and peppers). A few are about 4-5 inches tall, most are only about 1-2 inches, and only about half have their second set of leaves.

I want to move them (and the florescent lighting) to the garage - I just can't keep them indoors any longer. Do you suppose they will survive 40-50 degree temps overnight in the garage if I cover their lighting rack with platic sheeting?

Yes, they'll be fine even without cover. The only problem would be if it froze in your garage.
When is your average last frost date? If it is close, and as long as you are available to set the trays out during the day and then bring them in at night, you could even start hardening them off in the shade (for 5 days or a week), and bringing them into the garage overnight... no point starting though if the last frost is some time off and if you are likely to still get some wintery weather.

I should probably know the "official" last frost date but weather in this part of the state (central Minnesota with lots of lakes) seems to be more varied. As a matter of fact the ZONE we are in is not 3 but 3B, I think because it's a tad warmer than other areas, because of the many lakes. I have heard people say it is risky to plant outdoors until after Memorial Day. I DO have a low to the ground greenhouse tent (it's about 4 x 6 and looks like a white pup tent). I get plants into that as soon as I can but that is usually mid to late April and they are bigger than what I have right now.
