SO i got too late a start on my sprouts last year and they never went to fruit but i didnt pull them either figuring they would die...they didnt they made it thru the winter and are now growing like crazy. will they fruit this year or should i pull them? they have some flower buds growing it looks like. i will take a pic and show. i never grew sprouts before so im clueless
Brussel Sprouts?
I've not grown brussel sprouts, but I believe your plants are bolting (going to seed) and will not produce the little cabbage heads at this point. Someone correct me if I am wrong. My over-wintered turnips are bolting like crazy and are about 3 to 4 feet tall right now.
Concur, Brussells Sprouts are biennials and promply go to seed when overwintered.
so i should pull them, they rnt going to make the fruit after seeding?
If you do not wish to save seeds, pull and compost.
When do the brussel sprouts make heads? Do you have to put out plants in Sept. so that they make heads in December. I am talking Texas, Zone 9
I have no idea. I have not been able to time them correctly in Georgia. Too hot to get them started earlier than September. They take 3-4 months from transplant and we just don't seem to have cool weather that long. They tend to bolt in February.
With our temps, it's a gamble to grow them here. Only very early hybrids do well. I have not grown them myself but have friends here who do. I think they grow a variety called Oliver and they set their plants out mid-October...
In your zone funghi (I'm guessing 5-6) you should be able to successfully grow them if you get the timing down.
