Hi! I want to plant a garden this year, but will be gone much of the summer off and on. When I was a little girl my parents always planted a garden and I remember that some of the plants would not be ready for harvest until fall, while others would produce veggies throughout the summer.
So here are my details and question: I live in southern Michigan. I will be leaving in mid-May through mid-June, back in June until mid-July, and back in late August. I have neighbors who can water and weed the garden for me. I just don't want food to be wasted if I am not there to harvest it throughout the summer. So I need to plant only veggies that will be ready in June/July and September. Does anyone know when I should plant for veggies that will be ready during these times I will be home?
Thanks!
Catherine
MI GardenNeed to know when veggies will harvest!
I'm afraid that's way beyond me. I'm not sure many veggies will stick to that kind of schedule:). Most of mine produce all season, but I choose them that way. You might try some determinate tomatoes, they are all "supposed" to ripen at once, and after a certain amount of time, but that's probably iffy. Why not just let your neighbor harvest and use them while you're gone, or donate to a local food bank? BTW, hang on to that neighbor!! Anyone who would weed and water someone elses garden is a keeper*G*.
