rest up to get your battery recharged, lady. things are going you way and that makes our day!
News (not so) good. Part 2
Get all of the rest you need, ladygardener, your body needs all of its energy to keep your numbers going down. I am so glad that the treatments are helping. Don't worry about the things that aren't getting done, just rest and heal.
LadyG, you just rest and we'll jabber on. Doing everything by hand would be very time consuming. It's too bad it happened that day. I sure hope things go well from now on.
We took the jeep out for a short drive to get a change of scenery. Then we covered the 27 plants in the garden. I stayed out a bit longer, but it wasn't pleasant. I had to look at the flowers that are hanging on, mentally wondering if any will be affected. I really hope it doesn't do the iris in.
I'm sitting here getting cold, and just when I get ready to make some hot tea, I warm up. I'm supposed to be done with fluxuating! I'm going to have hot tea anyway!
LadyG, you have a nice night.
Jabber jabber jabber
It was crazy=windy here today. I had my eye on the hammock, in the sun, but ended up watering some new transplants. Hope you're starting to feel yourself, lady.
I think the drop in potassium put me well into the fatigue mode. I only had to take 1 pain pill on Friday as I was getting like an electric shock feeling in my knees. One pill took care of it and never returned. Walking much better this time. I am still resting but fell like doing a few little things. Where before I didn't want to even think.
I made arrangement to take off work tomorrow so that is covered and I can veg some more.
I changed pharmacies this time and the e-script went through fine. I was having trouble with CVS and it took a day to get my scripts filled and several trips to the pharmacy. This time my pills were at the new pharmacy when I got there and I was on my way home in 5 minutes.
I hope all your flowers are making it through this chilly spell, we had some very high winds in the area but where I live it sort of missed us. All night Friday and into Saturday the scanner reported trees down everywhere. Where I work in Ohio the trees and power were down a lot. Several into homes.
Hoping once this system moves on this will be the last and we can get on with spring.
Happy Mothers day everyone!
Hang on there Ladyg get your rest and vegg out all you need. Hopefully you will be feeling better soon.
It is about 50* outside and looks pretty windy still. I don't expect to be doing any gardening today and tomorrow we will be heading up to my parents to work, weather permitting.
You guys a a fit and a half. LOL
Billy, I think it was you that was talking about the eggs and asparagus? Well thank you or whoever Ric made me an Asparagus omelet with sausage and cheese the other morning. Boy it was good. We will be having a mixed Mothers Day and JR's Birthday celebration today.
Hey Critter, How is your first Mothers Day going. LOL

Sally, some days I really wish I had a hammock, but I would be in it for 5 minutes, see a weed or something that needed my attention and I'd be out for the rest of the day. Then I'd have to mow under it, LOL!
LadyG, what an amazing thing potassium is. I didn't know it was so powerful. That's good to know. 2 glasses of tomato juice supplies a daily requirement for potassium. That's good to know too.
At least you took some stress out by changing pharmacies. We had a small town store that just couldn't take the time to fill the order when you came in, even tho they were doing something else, (not filling bottles) and you were the only one standing there. To me that is bad business.
I'm glad the wind missed you! We've had gusts up to 23 mph, but rarely go over that. We have had straight line winds twice and within a few years of each other. The old timers in town said they had never seen winds like that around here. Now we have El Nino's and El Ninas. Weather is changing, or, they are now just naming weather patterns.
Critter, how beautiful! A wonderful Mother's Day to you too!
HollyAnn, I've missed you and Ric. I thought you were never get over being sick, or busy! How is ''Holly's Folly'' coming along? The casserole was most likely me. I grew up on it. The omelet sounds absolutely delicious!!! Sounds like a wonderful day ahead for you! May the sun shine and the wind quit!!
We have had wind for days! Not to offend, but it's like imagining Chinese Water Torture. I can't take the incessent things! Today is calm and the sun is out for now. I walked the yard yesterday, but the cold wind drove me in. We covered 27 tomatoes and other tenders in the garden. My flowers usually come out ok. The dew is on every blade of grass. I think I'll let it dry before going out today.
We don't have a Mother's day visit or celebration. DD is the Mother now and her MIL has a dinner, I think. I'm more than happy to let them go there and have a unhurried day with them.
I need to check the rhubarb. I think I have enough put in the freezer. I may have to re-think keeping 7 plants for two people, especially with horse manure to feed them. I guess it won't go to waste, but I think it diminishes the plant if it doesn't have a reason to rejuvinate.
I took every spear of asparagus yesterday. Anything above ground would have frozen anyway, so we had more tips than usual. It was like getting more doughnut holes than doughnuts!!
Well, that was a book!
Have a great Mother's Day everyone!!
One of my favorite iris!
Purple Pepper
lady, I hope that potassium has continued to soak thru your system and help you feel better.
billySally- we are soul sisters re the hammock I only spent time in it the other day due to a little crunched big toe I needed to elevate. With the crazy wind I didn't feel like doing anything in the garden yesterday but still ended up walking all over watering things. So much for doing nothing in the garden and elevating the toe. Unusal freckles on that iris! how cute.
This iris is new to me from jill, High Spirited. Too peach for her. (edited cultivar name)

Sally, I'm laughing! It's good to know I'm not the only one that can't sit still. I always called it ''The Tom Sawyer Syndrome,'' after him not being able to sit still in Church. That's me and the doodle-bug!
Never too peachy. That is so beautiful!
That peach iris is very pretty -- in your garden, LOL.
Little Bit had Tom Sawyer syndrome in church this morning... finally had to take her out for a few minutes because she was doing a running commentary on the sermon.
I guess I don't even need to mention what a fabulous day I'm having!
LadyG, hope you continue to recover better this time.
Oh Sally that is a beautiful iris. So far all my iris blooms are white. I know there are others they just haven't bloomed yet.
Re: the hammock I do the same thing when I get in the pool. I get in play around and cool off then start noticing the weeds in the beds near the pool so I get out and start weeding. I think quite often about the fact that I have so few leisurely hobbies. Yes I read and do crafts (in the winter). But my summers are filled with hobbies that really make you work. Use to be the horses, carrying saddles, water, hay & 50lb bags of grain, now the diving with tanks, lead weights and all the other heavy equipment. Throw in all the gardening, don't have to tell you guys how much work that is. LOL
Billy, Sorry to say that we aren't over the hump yet. I have been feeling much better but Ric is still having trouble. He was working on the Gazebo for a couple of days and his wrists are pretty bad and he just isn't feeling well. We had our GS JR here for a few days while our DIL had some surgery and he was sick while he was here. I woke up with a sore throat this morning which seems to be the first symptom so we will see, how I am come Monday. I think Josh and Jamie are going to come and help with a few things that need to be done. Ric talked to Jamie about getting the hot tub up and running and I think Josh will be over at the end of the week to set the RR Ties and help with the Gazebo.
Chris saying a special prayer for you today...feel better soon...
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!
Glad to hear from you Chris. I'm always trying to up the potassium in my diet, but have to avoid supplements. They interact with one of my meds in a harmful way. Holly, you've given me a good idea of how to use up some of that asparagus.
I keep looking in the various supermarkets for some Tilapia that's not from China. Every one of the frozen packages that I read says "product of China', farm raised. The defrosted stuff in the cases doesn't give the origin. The US state dept warns not to eat any seafood in China as the water is not potable. So how come all of this chinese fish is being sold in US markets? I know that some bacteria and parasites can survive freezing and cooking fish does not get to a high enough internal temperature to kill them. When I sent my clothes to a laundry in China, they came back dirtier than before they were washed. I don't want to eat any chinese fish. It certainly can't be good for people with challenged immune systems.
Critter, I hope that you are having the most wonderful Mother's Day ever.
Jill, I'll bet she was so adorable! I'm suprised he didn't call her to fhe pulpit to say a closing prayer. What a great example for everyone :o)
Oh Holly, you and Ric have my sympathy. I hope you aren't coming down with it as bad as JR. Does Ric have carpel tunnel? I hope he doesn't make it worse by working thru the pain. I agree, you keep busy! Diving?
Stormyla, I hear you!! I have tilapia in the freezer right now, not even thinking about the warning when I got it. I will read my package. We only have 4 pieces left and we haven't been sick yet. But who can tell about any worms and parasites, and I don't even want to think about that.
Eating out of the garden and home butchering is about the way to go. We took a giant leap forward over the years for convienience, but maybe we will have to go back someday.
LadyG, I hope your day warms enough to sit outside. Have you got the laptop configured yet?
I mowed yesterday and weeded as much speedwell as I could. I'm still not done, and it's just one bed. I am so, going to Preen it! It was 50° when I got up, so I have high hopes for no more freezing or frost. I'm going to put the buckets and bricks away today and let the asparagus grow. We have a small breeze and a chance of rain. I hope it holds off.
We'll have the boys this weekend. I've been spoiled by the peace and quiet from not having them, LOL!
((((BIG HUGS))) LadyG. Rest and watch the world go by!
And now, for something completely different!
Hot Caps.
Stormy, I was eating up to 3,400 units of potassium, trying to get the #'s up. but I guess not all foods with high potassium is not easily processed by the body. but you do what you can. I am so glad that I don't have to take all those pain pills like I did before. They messed up my peripheral vision and that didn't help with driving, even when I felt good. I had to stay home till things got better.
I have the laptop up and running It is so nice to sit in the recliner and enjoy DG and all your posts. Still getting use to using it, but it is a blessing. to have it. I need to try transferring some of my pictures to my flash drive so I can post pictures but one step at a time, I need to thing about organizing them first. I know all my frog pictures will go in one album, they really have some personality even for frogs LOL
I just don't get it with all the warnings and we still buy out of China, I don't even buy treats for my dogs that come from there and that can take some time going through all the different ones to find made in the USA.
Today it is sunny but still cool outside might get out a little to take a stroll in the yard. I plan on doing very little today. Just what I feel like doing.
My daughter call me last night on their way home from the boat. They drove through some hail on Friday to get there, and didn't get much sleep on the boat as it was rocking quite a bit from the wind. But they visited with boating friends and had a good time.
They like to get away as mush as they can.
billy, I see you are all set to plant out. have you used those hot caps before do they work well for you?

BIlly, I am a SCUBA diver. I don't get to go often, but I just love doing it. I was drift diving in Cozumel last Nov. You get into the water at one spot and the current just carries you away you feel like you are flying. The boat follows the divers and pics you up down current. I will be going to Utila next Oct hopefully we will see Whale Sharks. I was a volunteer diver at the N.J. Aquarium for several years which was a great way to get in the water a couple of times each month. Ric had carpel tunnel surgery a couple of years ago and it did help with some of the pain but he has serious Arthritis, it is bone on bone in his wrist. Please let us know how those Hot Caps work.
Ladyg, It is hard to find things not made in china especially toys. Will you be going out on the boat this summer? I can't think of anything more relaxing than cruising across the Lakes. Wind in your new grown hair and sun on your beautiful face.
Chilly this morning but pretty sunshine for the day. Hope you woke up 'fresh' today Chris. No frost right here, but from looking at frost charts it seems this area is a litle warmer probably due to so much waterways all around this county. Gita just may have gotten frost though, and critterologist
No frost here--but sure is chilly! I have all my annuals either in beds or sitting around in flats under my patio.
Not much else i can do! This cold snap sure was not expected....
I did bring my 2 flats of Coleus cuttings and my Non-Stop begonias back inside. Hid my 2 leafed-out brug cuttings under a table. Clivias are all outside----My planted in beds/pots Brugs are all outside. Tomatoes have been in the bed for 3 weeks....I did cover all these the night we had 38* and 41* a week or so ago.
One effect all this cold is having is that nothing is growing as it should.
Gotta get outside later today and see what else I can get planted. Also--have to, seriously, start making a "haves" list for the Swap. Seems not too many people have posted anything in that. Might be a last minute frenzy.....
I hate putting up with all the bulb foliage! it takes up so much room that I cannot really plant things where i would want to....I tied some of them up with stretch-ties in big bunches......Have wire fencing around other large clumps to keep the leaves somewhat contained.....This goes on EVERY year!!!
Chris--I went looking for a link I had bookmarked for home made Dog Treats....
Can't seem to find it! I know I had it as I sent it to my daughter a few years ago....
I bet you could Google it!
I am freezing in this house!!!! My hands are ice-cold......
NOT gonna turn the heat back on!
Here's a pic of Clivia divisions #2 and #3 blooming...
Have to get ready soon to go play Volleyball.....Gita
Holly, I buy non food products that come from China. It's mostly food that is my concern. I know that toys have been an issue, but I don't understand why there isn't tighter control over the import and inspection of food from 3rd world countries.
It's just that our bodies can't handle the bacteria and parasites that are in their water. Even the Chinese don't drink the water. They boil it and drink tea. Fish, produce and dairy products from there can all have living organisms that westerners can't tolerate. The same is true for those items from India and Africa. There is a lot of produce in our supermarkets now from Africa. I've read that most African's blood will test positive for an average of 6 parasites. When I'm choosing produce, I read those tiny little stickers and try to avoid anything from Africa. In the winter, lots of the citrus in our markets comes from Africa.
When I've been in those countries, the native tour guides would stop us from buying many food items that they themselves would eat. On one trip, someone in our group ignored their warning, and ate some cooked vegetables at a local market. The very next day, our tour was derailed as he had to seek medical treatment. On another trip, we had someone get horribly ill from swimming in the Indian Ocean. They required hospitalization. You could see the pipes pumping raw sewage into the ocean. The hotels (5 stars) even supplied special containers in the bath tubs to rinse your hair so you wouldn't have to put your head under the shower and accidentally ingest some water. When the top hotels all have "Not Potable" sign on all of the spigots, I doubt that the fish are being raised in sterilized water. Nor do I think the crops are being given sterilized water.
my son-in-law loves to give give us a tour of the Lake. Last year we docked at another marina over night. We ate a restaurant there that had outdoor dinning and they had the best sweet potatoes fries, I ordered them and had to share, they were so good, they told all their boating friends, there were 2 other boats that went up with us. It was a good time.
I toured the yard this morning and found out a good size limb came down off the maple in the back yard. I can't tell if any damage was done to the picket fence, it is wooden so a fix will be easy. Some African Queen lilies got nipped by frost but no buds have set yet so they may be ok. And I have lots of Iris buds coming along. One of my rhubarb plants started to bold so I cut the flower stalk off, and I had to waste some asparagus as it had gotten away form me and not good for eating. A patient told me to harvest till June so I'll be following her advise.
Gita, One of my dogs love flavored raw hide, it keeps her busy, When I order their flea preventative I'll order her some USA rawhide. I have a site where they label all their USA products. If I made home made treats for them they would be like little piggies. LOL They are restricted to the amound of snacking they do, but they love popcorn and chips.
Stormy, that is scary, I wonder if those guys who eat strange foods on the travel channel get tested for parasites on a regular basis. When we were on our cruse a long time ago, we were told not to buy any fruit or vegetables from the people in the town, in Dominica as it was not safe to eat. Their back yards were fertilized from their waste. Yep! real healthy. The port that were were to stop in was damaged in a hurricane so we has to stop at an alternate port for the day.
Last day of my dive trip to Grand Turk, I got very sick right after lunch and was vomiting all afternoon and into the evening. It was a bummer as I missed the last night party. I would go out and stand on the balcony listening to all the festivities and wish I felt well enough to go down and join them. I found out months later that my roommate on that trip picked up some kind of parasite and was sick for months after we got home before they figured out what was wrong with her. I always wonder if that was why I got so sick and would I have had the same problem if I hadn't.
NOW!!! This is real ancient history-----BUT! I will share anyway.....
In our house in Latvia (we fled in 1944) we had an outhouse type of a toilet... And this was in a major City!
This was "normal"--as no one had actual plumbing..... All the waste went into a receptacle that got emptied semi-regularly by something akin to a Port-a-Pot emptier truck. I do not know the frequency of this "service"....
THEN--mind you--this was in the 1940's--As I understand it--all this waste was used to fertilize the Farm-Lands and the vegetables they were growing....Everyone ate the veggies--and, almost everyone had intestinal worms....
It was common! I remember stooping down and pooping as a child---in the garden--and then gathering all the worms and taking them to our chicken coop and feeding them to the chickens....(sorry to be so graphic)...BUT! You can see where I started out as an environmentalist and a gardener at age 6!
My Mom was a teacher--and she used to tell us stories (way later in life) how she had to help many of her students pass the "knots" of worms in the school's bathrooms....It was just the "norm" in everyone's lives....
Latvia is NOT a third-World County--but I suppose back "then"--life was--what it was!
We all are healthy Seniors by now.....and I can tell you that I believe I have antibodies to things you never heard of.
I seldom get sick and I never get infections.....also--never have headaches.....
I am a strong believer that the more "ichky" stuff you expose young children to--the more resistant they will be in life for all kinds of maladies....
--DON'T be a "freaked out" parent if your child eats dirt or anything else you deem inappropriate!
--Don't be a clean-freak! There are hardly any germs in anything in the USA--as everything is so strictly regulated...
--Don't always say--"Don't touch that!"--It is dirty!...when it is not! All you are doing is passing on irrational fears
to your children...that then live by those fears--like:
"Oh my God!" This food has an expiration date today--I have to throw it out!!! WHY??? It was OK yesterday!
Right? SO! Why is it not OK today? Or tomorrow?--Or a week from now--if properly stored???
America is probably the most clean, sanitized, pasteurized. germ-free country in the World--Yet--we have so many people that suffer from the slightest stale/rotten/germ-infested foods in the World.....We ARE a sick Country!
Take Cheese and bread! Mold on cheese and bread is of NO consequence! it looks bad--tastes bad--but it will not harm you! What do you think all that stuff is in Blue Cheese???
Sour milk--even though it it seems repulsive---is NOT bad for you. In the "Old World" (before pasteurization) milk was allowed to go sour on purpose. That's where they got the "Curds and Whey"! "Curds" was the soured milk that had gotten "clumped" (like-- you could cut it with a knife) and "whey" was the fluid that collected at the bottom--often used as a refreshing beverage on the farms.
At the top was the cream--which got churned into butter. Nowadays--this is sold as whipping cream.
IF you boiled the "curds"--you got "Cottage Cheese". IF you boiled the Cottage Cheese with milk and butter and caraway seed, etc...You got wonderful, home made, real Cheese.
So you see--We here are all too freaked out about germs--and never develop natural resistance to any of these natural "bacteria"....
I DO realize, that there are foods that should never be eaten when spoiled......I am just talking about some of the not-so-bad-for-you-foods when they seem after their prime.....
Hey! I grew up in the "Old Country" with all of this.....worms and all---and I am healthy to this day!
BE RATIONAL! Gita
and on that note maybe it's time for a new thread...if Chris feels up to it, or someone
LadyG, I've used them once. It was so windy the other day, I was afraid they would end up in the neighbor's yard, a block over. If you don't can tomato juice, buy V-8. If you like to drink juice, that is. It might be harsh on your stomach.
HollyAnn, I do remember that now from posts long ago! It's a pretty cool hobby! Ric has my utmost sympathy! Yet he gets so much accomplished in spite of it. The hot caps do work, and most of my plants were tiny enough to fit under them. I really don't like buying China toys, especially after the lead in their paint. Is that what they stock in their own stores? But, try to find anything that isn't.
Gita, I hear you on not expecting the cold snap. After 80° days, who knew? We broke down and have heat. We just close the shades and curtains since we took the plastic and storms off. Beautiful Clivia!
Stormyla, makes me happy to not travel. Yes, and they wonder why the lettuce has Salmonella! Ditch water is used for irrigation!
LadyG, that sounds so peaceful, to dock and dine! Glad the frost didn't hurt anything and the asparagus will keep on coming. The 5 tiny roots my Dad brought up, from my SIL are all up but one. Such baby stems :o) I need to get a marker with the date printed on it so we know how old they are a few years from now. My rhubarb started to bolt as soon as I started harvesting. I've got a lot of thin, but tough stringy stalks too.
All this talk of parasites makes me real glad to stay home!! The parasites are hard to diagnose when you go to your Doctor. It's the last thing they expect to find, and you can have fatigue and be sick for a long time.
Gitagal, if you don't remember the past, you are condemned to repeat it! It's graphic, but it was a way of life for you. I can see how things were regarded as a normal way of life. You are so right about getting dirty! Amen!
We had wind and rain yesterday. I think it's all over now. The sun can shine any time! We got 1-3/10'' rain, I won't be stepping in any beds for a while. I got out yesterday morning and put Preen on the Rose Bed. I didn't get finished weeding in there, but I need to kill any speedwell seeds and others that dropped!
We get the boys Friday and take them back Saturday.
Feel better LadyG!! (((HUG)))
Started a new thread as this is getting long.
