My plants are not absorbing water. Help?

Pottstown, PA

I am new to the houseplant scene and am struggling in several areas. I have about twenty five plants that are beginner houseplants. My pothos, ivy, and spider plants are not absorbing the water when I water them. It just pours from their drainage holes. Their root systems are in good/decent shape and I am at a loss as to where to go from here.

the reason it is pouring down the sides and out of the drain holes is that that are bone dry and have shrunk away from the pot sides. either they are root bound and need re-potting to a slightly larger pot with additional fresh soil or they were allowed to become too dry. if they don't need repotting, then you need to get a large bucket or container, fill with water and slowly lower each plant into the water. if you do it too fast, they'll just pop out of the pot and float to the top. once they've been allowed to thoroughly soak, bring them out and let them drain completely before putting a saucer under them. you don't need to keep these particular plants too moist so my suggestion would be to water them this way in the future, only when they need a good soaking. houseplants usually die due to an excess of water rather than a lack of it. hope this helps.
