It really is a good idea to prearrange swaps. But I just love walking around and grabbing whatever catches my eye, It's just so much fun and I still have plenty of room to plant things so I don't have to worry too much about where I'm going to put things.
Spring swap 2010
I am working on my have list...as a new gardener I am skinny on established plants but have ALOT of seedlings right now. I may browse this year as well unless something is posted that I cannot resist!
Thanks all...so looking forward to this.
Crystal
Good Morning All,
After watching this thread only sporadically, I see that I will need to bring food to swap!! Or maybe not since no one has ever asked for seconds on anything I've ever cooked. (LOL) Right now I only have an annual garden (I rent gardening space) But I would love some honey suckle Jill for my patio if its still possible. I have a jasmine (the person who sold it to me swore it was jasmine sambuc) I have been delaying pruning it for cuttings. But I think that may be the only plant that I have worth swapping. Does any one want a cutting? Also, I started Larkspur imperial (double bloom) only to discover that Larkspur doesn't transplant well. I'll be happy to bring some if anyone wants to take a chance!
Let Me Know,
Marlene
Marlene, I'll check this week to see if I can find more layered/rooted pieces of honeysuckle.. Gita also started that one from a cutting, just rooted it in water, so we can try that if need be. Don't think in terms of what is "worth" swapping, because it's not like we only want/need rare and exotic plants for our gardens... common plants are often more in demand, and also, what you think of as "common" because it has spread all over your garden might be exactly what somebody else is looking for.
I finally had some free time during my lunch hour, and started catching up on DG. I am free the 29th, so I can join the party! Terri
Terri - awesome! I'll add you to the "who's coming thread" ^_^
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1089024/ - chit chat
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1089025/ - got plants
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1089021/ - who's coming
and last, but not least
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1089023/ - food!
Hi everyone,
Thank goodness HollyAnn dmailed me because I have been very bad about keeping up with you guys. I definitely will be there on the 29th. I'm looking forward to it. Bec, I'm in Falls Church, so let me know if I can help out.
Froggy! Most excellent - I'm adding you to the list :)
~Formidable!
Bec, I'm considering coming. Don't know how much swapping I'll be doing. I'm very behind on everything this year and have a lot less time for digging and planting. Thanks for making the effort. It is a lot of work and will be much appreciated by everyone.
Bec- what is your town/ zip code area, if you will. So we can get a rough idea on travel times for planning.
The white Siberian Iris Anniversary that you shared with me has a bloom. Really tall!
Sally - I'm in 22193 zip code
Sally, you should see the huge clumps of violet Siberian iris from the ones you shared with me... blooming like mad in the rain!
Hmm, Becky, got any more of that white one? I'll trade you a start of my Stephan jasmine (the one you ordered from Brushwood for me)...
Jill - I have oodles of Iris if you want to dig up a clump :-) Already have the Stephan :) Got annuals?
I can fix you up with a selection of basils! Have you split your irises this time of year before? I know this is not a good time to divide bearded irises, but the sibs may be different.
The irises I gave Sally was split last year ^_^
I'd love some basil's - I do have some growing right now (Thai, purple and Italian) - getting ready for transplant to pots...you know I'm fine with anything ^_^
Annuals Bec--can you use a creeping blue flowered one? Ladyg sent me seeds for this laurentia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1507/
which looks like finely textured, low growing, blue flowered goody. I am running out of room in the garden and can share some plants. six pack size. Hope to get some planted out this week, and then will up pot the others to help them grow.
Looks lovely and I'd love some :-)
Anyone interested in the usual that I cant' get rid of????? What, you ask? The low growing agaves (have 4-5 pups) and some type of cactus that's coming back...also have some pads of the smaller Prickly pear native out this-a-way. Can pull up a bag (at least) of vinca for any that didn't or did get it previous years. Will have Passiflora volunteers come June - just remember to dmail me. Have MANY (no surprise) MG babies coming up all over the yard...take them or they get yanked and tossed. I have what I believe is the hardy Ice Plant...she's a wonderful ground cover - so tolerant....bright Fuchsia blooms from now till frost. May have limited Semp and Hens -n- chick pups - all would have at least some burgundy coloring. And I'm contemplating offering up the 2-3 year old Mock Orange that was bought from Bluestone as 'Innocence' but - if I do be forewarned the scent is subtle at best! Will bring cuttings for those that ask of Stephan's Jasmine http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/80118/ - she's she's hardy here...cute little pink blooms...but not much to any scent I can detect. I have seeds for Nicotiana 'Fragrant Cloud' - not too late to plant those...smell is Unbelievable...ask anyone. I'll compile a better list here shortly...once I realize what the heck I actually have out there....
Opps almost forgot...the neighbors Blood something Maple has shared babies once again...happy to bring the newborns to you.... Sedum anyone??? Can bring cuttings....

Are they hardy agaves, Chantell? If they are I'd love one. Blood something maple babies would be wonderful too. BTW, might want to post this in the what plants we have thread Bec created.
The siberians Bec split for me last year, look great! I don't think they go so dormant as bearded. My older Siberians that jill has now, I moved some clumps last year and they are blooming again now too. I have plenty to share.
Bec I'll have the laurentia for you!
I did find a couple more pieces of my American honeysuckle with roots starting, so I potted them up. Greenthumb & Foxy, I've got you down for them, and I've got one more pot. Cuttings also root easily in water, I think (Gita has done it.. fair warning, this is the vine that tried to eat her house, it's fairly vigorous).
If anybody is interested in 'Biokovo' (white) hardy geranium, let me know... I'll pot some cuttings if I get a chance, otherwise I'll just bring bags of crowns (just stick them in moist potting mix; I've had very good luck propagating these).
Heya! Me again. Just got an email from Bleek. TouchofNature is having a spring clearance: http://www.touchofnature.com/specials/spring.htm
Shipping is $7 for the first $25, then $10 for up to $75 worth of stuff... My order totals just $10, so I thought I'd see if anybody was interested in going in on an order with me.
We'll need to move quickly on these. :-)
LOL Jill - placed mine and Bec's order last night...couldn't drive 95 fast enough to get home.
Diane - oh they're hardy alright...will post on "right" thread - sorry folks...ugh
Critter, I would so love some of the Biokovo if you have plenty. I got some from you before but managed to kill it by planting it in a spot that was too dry. I'll know better next time.
Jill--
I will order a couple of things to help you out....I Love Montbracias! Just hope they make it here....Haven't had much luck in the past. But--these are cheap! Do you think these will just bloom next year?
1--Crocosmia "Lucifer" 10-12cm. size...................10 for $2.50
2--Oxalis "Iron Cross"..(pink flowers)........................25 for $2.50
3--Canna King--(yellow).............................................2 for $1.50
Hope this helps a bit....Maybe others will pitch in too.
I'll square off with you at the Swap and pay my share of shipping costs too.
Thanks---Gita
Foxy---
YES! Honeysuckle cuttings root easily!
Here is the one Jill gave me back in may of 2007. See how well it has rooted in less than a month?
You folks don't know how heart warming it is to come in here after being away for a while and seeing everyone's lovely faces. Each of you hold a special place in my heart and it is one of those things that can be compared to the V-8 commercial....duh...I could have had a V8. I could have been coming in here daily and getting my heart warmed but nah, been super, super busy.
John and I will be attending the swap on the 29th. We will be missing my three year old grand daughter's birthday party to do so, if that registers how important going to the swap is for us. Much thanks to Becky for offering to host a swap again.
Those who will be attending a swap for the first time, you are definitely in for a treat. It will be good to meet some new people even though I adore each and every one of you that I have met before.
Will go and check out the other links and add my info. So good to see you all posting.
Ruby
Gotcha, Gita & Catbird. We'll figure out shipping on a % basis. We did go over $25, but we can add about $40 more before our shipping charges increase again. As far as I can tell, they are charging shipping based on the order total (not on the cost of the order before the deep discounts), which is definitely a bonus!
I think I will submit our order and then just ask Bert to add to it if anybody else wants "in." He and Ingrid are used to my "can I just add a few more things please?" calls, LOL.
So if anybody else wants to add to the order, please post here (I don't think we're in danger of overrunning this thread with stampeding orders).
Thanks!
Ruby, I'm *so* glad you & John will be there! I'd love a piece of 'Jacob Klein' please.
I'm sure I can add to my order tonight, and likely I can add through at least tomorrow also.. but the sooner you click to check out the specials, the better. http://www.touchofnature.com/specials/spring.htm
Becky, are we doing a gift exchange? Not that the whole plant swap isn't essentially an exchange of garden gifts, LOL, but I figured I'd check in case I could round up an item or two this weekend. (or order an extra bag of, say, Peacock Orchids!)
:-)
Gifts? I hear gifts...oh wait, that wasn't just for me?? LOL
We can if y'all want to ^_^
Bec--
We all are. kind of, used to having a gift table by now......Seems it has become a tradition. I guess Jill started it!
By now--I plan, and shop, for what i want to bring for a gift without even asking...Please post this on your Threads.
It is a fun part of a Swap. Will you PLEASE plan for it???? Like--provide a table for all the gifts and figure out a way to organize a "drawing" for them? Games? Bingo? Drawing for numbers? Whatever......
Gita
Hmmmm...
The easiest way I've ever done this was at the fall plant swap at my place... anybody who wished to bring a gift for the table did so. Everybody who brought a gift put their name into a "hat" when they made their name tag. We drew a name at random to start, and as each person chose their gift they drew the name of the next person and told them to go choose something. That worked, but it did take more time than it would if you made an "event" of it and drew numbers one right after another, or something. As with anything else, there is no "one true way," and whatever you decide to do (including skipping the idea entirely) will be fine!
I vote for just a number drawing if anything. Or no gifts. Or a few, and names from a hat. Whoopee!
Catbird that is one AWESOME quilt you have there! The artist eye, as with your jewelry. I never know how to put fabric together and got the box of pieces to prove it.
I am editing my haves/ wants as we go . Critter- a piece of Biokovo ? the geranium would be awesome. I had great succes rooting creeping stems of my other hardy ger. Geez, here we go, I go from Garden is OK--to Evrythings growing like mad, overflowing, and now I am having to rip out crap (and I have a plenty of that) to make room for the awesome new stuff available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....OR....
Do it alphabetically.....First letter of first name. If there are more than one person--then go to the second letter....etc...
Whacha think? it should move fairly quickly....as no drawings are included. G.
Changing my name to Aaron
LOLOLOLOL - I just chocked on my coffee!
I'll just make it simple - we'll draw by numbers ^_^
Got you listed for Jacob Cline Monarda Critter.
You are a bunch of goofs, you know!!!! Love it!!!
Ruby
Thanks! I just realized I've been greedy and already have a Jacob Cline coming from Greenthumb, but it would be fun to stick one "out there" and have one in a patio pot for Joyanna. If somebody else wants one, that's fine too!
Sometimes I can get crowns/runners from my hardy geranium that already have roots starting on them. I'll see what I can do!
