Spring swap 2010

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Bec is in somewheresville northern Virginia, probably an hour or so from here. I forget exactly--cuz I knew I would go back no matter where to see this crew. We'd go down I 95 and I think last time went straight thru 395 gettting thru DC.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah, if memory serves she's somewhere a bit south of the mixing bowl.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

Was that the time we ended up in DC? Took the worng turn---or was that going to hart's?
That was a "fun" excursion...trying to find our way out od Alexandriaa to continue on out trip!

I will go with you as well--if that is OK! You have become the driver d'Jour! I will follow you if needed.....
When i follow a lead car--I am a bumper-huger......:o)

Gita

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Yup - straight down I-95, about 20 ++ miles from DC :)

Clarksville, MD

Quiet lurker gardener here. I have never been to a swap but would like to try one out.
What do I do? Start dividing some of my overgrowns into pots now? And bring them with me hoping to find someone who might want the extra? Or arrange swap in advance? Is swap for just seeds or plants?
Thanks for information. I can also bring a delicious baked good or something also.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Yay, another victim swapper!
All of the above works fine ^_^ Ilike to start potting up extra stuff as I work now. I have extra stuff potted from last summer (Iris) in anticipation!
Usually host sets up a thread and we try to match up wants and haves ahead somewhat. (Mostly plants at this season) Then everybody gets crazy and brings three times as much stuff as anybody needs--and brings home that much too. Plus eating 3x the yummy food we should in one day...Yes we potluck it generally.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh I remember my first swap at Harts boy it was fun. Glad to have you rileyobo. I have been digging perennials and potting some up. I hopefully will have some extra annuals from my plugs to bring. Cuttings from the Black Pussywillow, too. Bec will start a swapping thread where people will post what they have to swap and you just let them know what you would like, so some of the swaps are set up ahead but a lot of it is done the day of the swap. It's not so much a one for one swap as a plant free for all. LOL e

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I may have a couple of rooted pieces I could pot up, but if anybody wants me to stick some cuttings of my honeysuckle (Lonicera americana, which is not the invasive Japanese kind L. japonica), this is the time to mention it, since I'm pruning the heck out of it in order to reclaim the railing on the deck stairs. I could try to root some of my coral honeysuckle (L. sempervirens) also... hmm, maybe this is the time to finally set up that bubbler...

I'd like to try again with the black pussywillow, please. Mine (from last year) does seem to have roots, but it's not leafing out or getting green under the bark, so it may be deceased.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7b)

Nice that you are hosting the swap, Becky!

Oh-oh, the 22nd is shot, but I think I can do it on the 29th. I certainly don't want to miss this one, but everything seems to be getting in conflicts lately.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill,

I would love a start of L. americana. We have 3 acres of shade of one degree or another and always looking for shade tolerant species.

David

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, I put you down for the black PW.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7b)

I know there will be another thread on haves/wants, but I wanted to ost here while I had the chance that I'd like to get a black pussy willow cutting from you, Holly. I saw the pics from the other thread and finally "noticed." I like that they are good for cutting!!!

Jill, can I also have a honeysickle cutting? I always wanted one. I have the daylily "Stella d'Oro" for you.

If anyone needs Shasta Daisy, I have a'plenty.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Got ya Foxy.

I potted up a rooted cutting yesterday, David... will put your name on it! :-) Mine grows in sun, but I'm pretty sure they do fine in shade also... they do get big, as you probably guessed by my comment about the vine overgrowing my deck stairs. :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'd like a Jacob Kline start, please... and I've never yet turned away a daisy of any type. :-)

Foxy, I'll see if I can find some more rooted pieces... where the vine trailed along the foundation, it tried to send out roots! Thanks for offering the Stella, but I'm good on yellow DLs... somebody else will want it, I'm sure!

edited to add... I hadn't meant to start swapping on Becky's organization thread, sorry! Becky, should we hold off on plant chat until you get another thread up?

Sorry Critter, I won't be at the Virginia Swap but if you are coming to Mount Bethel, could you please post your Monarda and Daisy request on that thread.

Thanks

Teri

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Dang, suddenly I was hoping you'd make it to both! No worries about the plants... I'll find them somewhere. I'm not sure I'll make it to Mt. Bethel, depends on family plans that week. :-)

Crozet, VA

Yippie!!!!! Gonna see some of my all time favorite folks in the whole wide world. I too remember my first swap which was held at Harts. Thank you so much for getting these swaps started for us Hart. I will look forward to see everyone who is able to attend on May 29.

I will go and see if there are other sites set up for the swapping and food stuffs yet. Getting excited here.

Ruby

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I've got a brand new laptop and as soon as I get some pix transf. from my old one I'll start the threads! It'll be sometime today ^_^

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill,

I'll have some Monarda 'Jacob Kline' and some Shastas, also a couple other Monardas and 3 or 4 Agastaches you might be interested in.

David

Crozet, VA

Sounds good Bec.

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, David! The agastaches would be welcome also... my butterfly bed needs to be refurbished this year!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Agastaches will probably include A. rupestris, 'Black Adder', 'Summer Love', 'Honeybee Blue' and scrophulariifolia (Purple Giant Hyssop). In addition to Jacob Cline, Monardas may include 'Marshall's Delight', 'Blue Stockings', fistulosa, bradburiana and some unidentified cultivars. Let me know which ones you want since I may not bring them all.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks David... I'd love to try A. 'Black Adder' and also if possible 'Summer Love'. 'HB Blue' is coming along in a WS container for me, so I should be good there. I think I'm remembering that 'Marshall's Delight' is a shorter Monarda, so I've got a good place for that one, too. All I've got at present for Monardas is a lavender flowered one (is that fistulosa?) and lemon balm... don't know yet if they've come back well enough to divide this year.

I'll have to look for some other goodies for you!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Okey guys and gals - after much messing around, cursing and swearing never to buy another computer again - I'm up and running on the new laptop....next week I'll go through the same thing with new desktop and it'll be three times as much info I need to transfer!

I've just started 4 new threads to make an attempt at being organized

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Bec,
I have the utmost respect for anyone willing to host one of these Swaps--as it seems to require so much organizational time.....

I see myself as a VERY organized person, when it comes to holding BIG get-togethers. However--all the ones I have held have been of a social nature--for about 50+ people--but I have still been in complete control of everything.....A lot of work--nevertheless....
However--a "Swap' of any kind has tangents that I have never had to deal with......
This is EXACTLY why I am uncomfortable having a Swap here at my house--even though I have pretty good premised to hold one--and would not mind. NOT a Seed Swap--but a Plant Swap.....BUT---It seems too "involved" for me to feel comfortable with having one....

I cannot fathom dwelling with all the computer aspects of it. I do not have all that much time or patience or knowledge with any of this.....Honestly---it scares me--as Jill has set an organizational precedent few of us could ever meet/douplicate.....I think some of us have (I know I do!) a desire---but are scared off by the multi-needed Posts and Follow-ups that seem to be so necessary to hold a well-organized Swap.....I know I DO!!!!

The different Posts for the different aspects of a Swap....SOOO endless....
The different Posts of the plant "haves" and the plant "wants"...and the "rules" where to post what and "policing it".
The different aspects of the foods to be brought....vs the foods the Hostess will provide. Geez!!!!ALL foods are OK!
The need for every one to have directions....maybe housing---etc...Maybe other events nearby--etc...

I admit! I could never deal with all this---even though I am an experienced, and organized Hostess for a big gathering of this kind....It just has never been this complex.......SORRY!

I have expressed a desire in the past to hold a Plant Swap---but all this scares e away......

Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Good going Bec, I have started my 'haves' (and holler if you want some Shasta daisy back)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK! I'm "watching" all 4 threads. I love the roses you chose as thumbnails. :-)

Gita, it's a party... nothing scary about it. :-) Setting up multiple threads to let folks work out various details (and just chat) ahead of time makes it easier for folks to find information... and people who just want to write down the date and show up can opt out of the whole pre-organization part.

For me, the excitement and anticipation builds with each post about who is coming, who is digging/dividing something, who will be bringing their famous pickles... (you are going to make Becky's favorite pickles, right? LOL)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Bec---

I have not yet seen all the Posts for all the aspects of Your Swap---Maybe I just missed them.....

Pickles? SURE! No problem! BUT--It was Jill who requested them! NOT YOU!
What would you like me to bring??????

We need to. seriously, llimit the amount of food that was there last time! Total overkill!
It IS a "Pot Luck"--right? So--PLEASE don't spend Mega Bucks for all those platters of food you had ordered last time! It was SOOO good--but, also, WAY too much! i HATE to see any kind of food go wasted!!!

I think us DG'ers can come up with enough food to feed an Army.....Just have faith!......

Looking forward to all the Posts for all the things.....By now--I just need to go to bed!!!! It has been a busy day at work--and i am tired......

Gita

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL to all of the above - Like Jill stated, I'm just trying to keep it easier for people to find their haves/wants/foods & for me to have an idea of who's coming and can bring what etc - I sure as little green apples won't be "policing" anything ^_^ keeping track of threads is easy for me - I work with computers all day long ^_^

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi all,
I am a new Master Gardner and have never attended a plant swap before. I would love to come! Can you send me the links to the other post of specific request and so forth? also, where can I find the info and where the swap will be held? Are their rules or etiquette for attending that I should be aware of?

Thanks

Crystal

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Rule # 1 Newbies take all leftover plants,
JUST KIDDING!
Real Rule # 1 No rules , just right -
Welcome Crystal! The 'other threads' are in Mid Atlantic Gardening forum. I think critterologist has done some nice write ups, even an article, about good Swap plant prep--Jill, Bec probably wouldn't mind if you paste or link some prep hints somewhere; chat thread?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL Sally!

here's the "plant party" article: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1478/

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

This will be my first swap and I had a question about what type of plants to bring. I have seedlings of Lobelia, Shasta Daisy, Chives, and a few others. They will be just under 2 months old a the time of the swap...can I bring those or more established plants are preferred? How many should I bring?

Thanks
Crystal

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think everything from seeds & unrooted cuttings to trees in 5 gallon pots have changed hands at our swaps! You bring what you have to share, and you go home with new goodies to try... We don't try to do 1 for 1 swapping (unless you're arranging a swap in advance for a special plant you're trading with or for)... it's more of a "plant sharing" event.

These threads before the swap are great for gauging interest in a plant so you don't spend time potting up dozens of divisions of something and bringing half back home again. If I have them to spare, I try to bring a couple more of any plant than what people have requested ahead of time, but if I only get 3 people asking for tomatoes I won't pack up 2 flats of them!

(So you see, it's also important to ask if you see something you'd like on somebody's list, or you'll hear "oh I wish I'd known you wanted that, I'd have brought more!")

No rules involved.. just communication! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ooohhh.. Holly, could I please have a Campanula 'Pink Octopus'? (Funny how pink flowers are catching my eye this year, LOL) PF lists it as growing to only 24" -- really? or is it taller? Thanks!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter got ya, Mine was new last year and it wasn't very tall I was so pleased and surprised to see that it had spread so far that I could dig some up to share.
Crystal , The other thing is don't be shy about asking for plants.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Nawww, just ONE extra flat ROFL!!! we love our critter the tomato queen.

We really all just want loving homes, ,or at least a fighting chance, for our extra plants that we just have no more room for!
