What to do with newly purchased plants...

Tooele, UT

I bought two plants, Roses of Sharon "Arden’s" and a Lilac "President Lincoln." I live in zone 6 and I purchased both these from a local nursery. They were from both left over from last year so they had been around in the climate all year. Do I need to do anything special to prepare the plants before planting them or are they ready to go because they have been in the climate through the whole year? Also when planting them what recommendations would you give for alkaline soil. I am very new to gardening and would love some expert advice.

Welcome to Dave's, Fellow Utahn!

If your yard is like mine, I'd amend it with some good garden soil before planting. I would dig the holes about twice as big as you normally would before putting them in. Were they outside in the sun all year? If so, I'd keep them outside until this weather passes and then plant them. make sure they don't dry out but don't overwater, either. Both of those plants do well in our clay soil. Check the rootballs when planting. If the roots are going in a circle or are packed in, score the roots along the bottom and sides. The roots need to go outward rather than a circle.

Good luck!

Thanks! Do you think I would need to trim them at all? Thanks for your input!

I don't think you should trim them at all. I would just let them go for a year and then see what needs to be done. How big are they? I tried to kill my lilac when I got it. I put it under an area of my roof where it could get watered on it's own. We had a microburst and the poor thing about drowned! LOL

Here it is 4 years later. It's just behind the arborvitae against the fence.

Can you believe all this snow?

Both bushes are about 30-36 inches tall. Pretty good size bushes for a nursery. The Lilac already had buds on it. I see the storm has hit your yard too. Hopefully it passes soon and we can get back to gardening.

Yes, it should be over soon. Half of what is in the pic is gone.

Good luck with those plants and keep us posted on what happens.
