Hi! Does anyone know when Bleeding Hearts start to sprout in zone 5? I planted quite a few last year in different places, and so far, I'm not seeing anything I recognize as their little green leaves coming up. I love these things and am hoping I didn't lose them all!
Bleeding Hearts in Zone 5
I don't know when they would normally sprout in your area, but I think they're supposed to be hardy to zone 3 so I think they ought to come back for you even if you had a worse winter than usual. Of course there are other things that can happen to plants besides cold, but at least on that front they'd be OK.
I too have them planted in several places.Only one has started to come up so far.I am not worried. These plants are very hardy and never fail to come up.Depending on the weather,I think you will see something soon.A few weeks or sooner.Edge
They'll come up red, not green. Don't lose hope. Some take longer than others. Mine are just starting now.
Mine are just poking through the soil, and look just like pastime's picture. I got a new plant last year as well, and I'm glad to see it made it through the winter.
You shouldn't have any problems with Bleeding Heart in zone 5 - they survive Northern Ontario winters with gusto
My Bleeding Heart are about 4" high following 4 days of warm weather. Hostas are peeping through and astilbes are really leafing out.
Thank you all! I feel much better. I finally noticed two breaking ground yesterday; hopefully the rest will do the same soon. Spring takes a long time to come around here! I just love this time of year when so many green leaves are starting to pop up, bringing the promise of lovely gardens to come.
Bleeding Heart is about 12" tall and has started to bloom today.
Yay!!! Looks like they all came up - just later than I'd thought. I absolutely love these plants, so am so relieved and happy. Thank you all!
Yea!!!
I'm in Kansas and my bleeding heart has been blooming for several weeks now. I first planted them in a shaded area and they didn't do well - 2 died - then I transplanted the one and only into a sunny spot, thought it died last fall but kept watering it. It came back bigger than ever. Just hang in there. Kwanjin is right, they start out as a little red plant poking up out of the ground.
