I planted my Euphorbia late last summer.
Do I need to prune it back this spring for it to start new growth or is it too late?
pruning my Euphorbia blackbird
The one person who commented on it in Plant Files says that it appreciates pruning after flowering http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/164290/ So unless it's really overgrown I'd let it go for now and prune it after it flowers.
I love this plant and got one last year that isn't looking too happy. I've found slightly different info about pruning. Basically, all say to remove the stems after flowering to keep it full. Right now mine has 3 tall leggy stems instead of being full and bushy. I trimmed it in the fall and a few newer stems are starting to fill in from the base now- hopefully that will continue.
"Spent flowers and/or stems may be deadheaded or sheared if necessary throughout the season to encourage new growth and/or flower buds. Plant may be cut back some during winter to rejuvinate."
"When the flowers fade, cut the stem at the base to make new shoots, but be careful, as the sap causes skin irritation."
