California Gardening: So. Calif. Spring RU 2010 - continued

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sharon you are right about crazy weather!! It was 48 degrees when I left for work this morning but it is supposed to be in the high 90's by Friday. Just plain crazy!!

SW - Yes, I do remember the work party for Sept. Since I am new at the RU thing, I thought there were 2/yr, but makes sense that there would be just one. Saw photos at Dr Don's and recognized a few DG'ers going back a lot of years on the RU site.

What makes you say the winds would go away in one day? Today is 2 days later and they are still here. Agree they are the great thing going for summer cooling. Hate to have to run the AC more than necessary, only a couple nights a year. Sure dries the plants out fast though, especially smaller ones in plastic that can get blown away.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well today was a beautiful day for gardening and I had grandson Luke today. So instead of gardening, Grandma and Luke played, went for long walks in the stroller, he is 6 months old, and then we both took a nap. He is leaving for Spokane June 25th because his daddy is a doctor and has been in Spokane since early January on a new job at a hospital. His wife was a regional manager, so had to find a replacement and get the two older children, girls out of school. I will miss them but I will not have to worry about them surviving. Doctors are having very difficult times now. Will only get worse later. BUT, I HAD A WONDERFUL DAY WITH THIS CHILD THAT THOUGHT I WAS THE CAT'S MEOW....LOL

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Glad to hear that you had a good day with your GS, Luke, Sharon. Still keeping you in my prayers.
QG, I was referring to what the weather forecasters had said about the devil winds, not our normal winds.
Speaking of Dr.s, guess whose DH I ran into yesterday at my Dr's office? I had a major DUH moment when this nice looking man comes in and starts talking to me, like he knows me. And I so didn't recognize him. You'd think I would since he's been to my place a couple of times, and his DW has said he is the one with the lousy memory. Well QG, I got him beat. Sigh. Not a contest I wanted to win.
He is so funny! He had me laughing. Lordy does he know some bad jokes. They make you laugh anyway. Even our Dr. says he is funny. She didn't know I was the person who'd referred him to her.
BTW, Sharon, she is expanding her office. Of course she does treat patients with Arthritis and there's more of us every year. I was surprised that she isn't taking on a partner and is still expanding. She is doing okay. Probably because she quit accepting checks for payment. Just credit cards and/or cash please. She does accept insurance too.
You all take care, if I don't get a chance to check in much in the next month or so, it's because of Prom, Doheny Blues Festival (girls weekend out!), ES 21st B.day, YS's Graduation, Grad Party, YS's Jury Duty, Fathers Day, and to finish off June, my 35th class reunion.. Dang, my dance card sure got filled up fast.

SW, pretty funny. I did not know you ran into DH at Dr's until I read it here, today. Asked him about it and got that "oh yea, forgot to tell you" line. Yes, he is the jokster, so many we have heard multiple times. Some we still laugh at and some we still do not get. What a busy next month you have. Jeezo pete. And, young lady, you are NOT old enough to be having your 35th class reunion!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

You need that now Worms. With all the stress it is all so put in perspective when you see those little eyes. It makes me remember my kids at the age of my two granddaughters, when I see their eyes. I remember my babies so clearly. The kids both had kids 18 days apart. I was 45, and could not believe I was a grandma for the first time simultaneously. Time with the girls makes me so happy and away from life's problems.

SW you are singing my Alzheimer song.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I've been lurking here and there and missed out on all the news. Sharon I'm so glad to hear your DH is on the road to recovery. I was so surprised to hear about those energy drinks, boy the people I see buying them by the caseful at Costco's! My son was drinking them for a while, hope he gave up on them.

June 10th is the day scheduled for the surgery on DH rotator cuff. He has been in misery with his shoulder for so long. It didn't keep him from enjoying his time in Menifee though.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That is a tough one to recover from. Have him plan to sleep in a recliner with pillows all propped up all around him, for some time. A Police patient of mine, from a few years back, said he slept in one for a year, doing both Rotator Cuffs. It is easier. If they have that machine that rotates his arm so it does not freeze up from scar tissue, it will also be easier if he is in a recliner.

Praying all will go well.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Dang, I can't go away for a couple of days and stuff happens.
QG, your DH is a crack up! So are you. I graduated from High School in 1975, when I was 17. I am too old enough. I am really looking forward to going too.: - )
Sharon, babies are a great antidote to many sad things in our lives. Then they go and grow up on you! Hang in there sweetie. : - )
My baby boy is about grown up. (Sniffle) (I won't consider him really grown up till he gets his drivers license!). See how pretty he cleans up? He and his date had a good time at their Prom.
hellnzn, I'm glad you're singing with me. : - )
Samigal, it's good to hear from you, you've been missed. : - )
It'll be so nice when your DH finally has healed from the surgery. I had no idea that sleeping in a recliner would help him recover more comfortably. Won't be easy for either of you for a while.
I'll be keeping you all in my prayers.

Handsome boy SW but I still say hook him up in your little house. I love that house. Don't forget if you ever want to part with the side board, I am your girl. I love stuff with history. I don't mind restoring it either.

We never got to talk about the Cherokee registering thing. Oh well. If you ever come to a Pow Wow in Tehachapi, let me know. Do you know a singer, named Jimmy Lee Young? He works at the NASA library but is a Grammy Award Winner. I have several of his albums. I forgot what tribe he is from.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

If you want to check it out, here is a site that lets you hear parts of the hits he sang.

Dang, SW, he does clean up good. Course, I never saw him otherwise. Wearing DD's favorite colors. He's about her age. Just sayin', you know.

Pegi, give Mr. Samigal a hug from us and we will say a prayer for him. Sounds like good advice with the recliner. I do so love sleeping in those things. Not fully reclined, just half sitting/lying. They are perfect (so is the office chair) when I have the bronchitis. My grandma got one after her hip surgery that had an eject lever. Very cool. Got her to the potty sooner during the night, dontcha know.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

You know with my tailbone injury recliners work better for me too.
Hellnzn, I know a flute player up in Tehachapi, he is very good. Forgot his name, but it'll come to me. Yup, there it is, he is known as RavenFeather. He is super sweet. A good man. He is also knowledgeable about the Cherokee stuff. He always goes to the Tehachapi Pow Wow.
I haven't listened to Jimmy Lee Young, yet, but will check him out.
I really like a woman singer named JoAnne Shenandoah, I think she is Ojibway. She's a little bitty thing, but wow, what a voice! You can usually find her on itunes under world music or country. Just depends, they don't have a comfy pigeon hole for us. One size does not fit all. LOL!
Sometimes she sings in her native tongue, and sometimes she sings in English. Recently, she put out a real nice album with Paul Ortega. You know, I've never googled her, but you could find her there too.

I was not able to hear the whole album sampler but did here a couple of songs with her and another guy, that were not my favorites, because neither was singing, more like talking a song to music. I will check out Paul Ortega too. Please check out the link because you can skim a sample of songs real fast. I think you may like him.

I don't know Raven Feather.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

hellnzn, Look for the guy with the flute, that would be RavenFeather. He always carries his flute. It may be slung across his back. Or ask around, the vendors and the dancers will know him. At least the locals will. He'll be wearing his regalia (native ceremonial clothing). He is kind of low key and sometimes performs his flute playing during the dinner break. I'll try to put the word out on the Moccasin telegraph for him to get in touch with me.
I'll check out the links you provided. I'll let you know what I think about him.
Am disappointed that you didn't get to hear JoAnne really sing. Sigh.

I will see if she has some other albums that pop up to sample.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well, things are looking up in Las Vegas, except for the weather. Temperature in the high 60s today and tomorrow. 94 last week. What in the world is going on with this weather?

DH is actually starting looks like he might live. He is no longer huffing and puffing when he walks, no longer shuffling his feet and actually has his color back. Still no appetite but I am making sure he is getting his liquids. I guess you might say I am nagging.

My shoulder is finally back to 98% and only minor pain when I do to much gardening but an ice pack works wonders. And I have not fallen in 4 weeks. Of course, I was the brilliant one that had all these enormous boulders placed in my garden area to form planters. I have to navigate over the rocks to get into the beds. I should have someone video it because I am so careful, it must look hysterical.

I broke my glasses that were bent with the last fall. So when Baby Luke came over yesterday for a visit I did not get my usual happy smile and was confused until I realized I was wearing my prescription sun glasses and he could not see my eyes. As soon as I removed the sun glasses, we were right back on "Hi Grandma". Nice to see you smile.

SW, your son is one handsome young man. Good gene pool.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sharon you need the life alert thing too before you kill yourself.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Weather was a little weird here today as well. Windy, and I don't think it got above 60. I heard it snowed in Big Bear last night!!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

We are going to Tahoe and it is supposedly going to snow, so that is a little scary on an already 8 hour drive.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Windy and cold here too. The wind beat up my poppies, mostly the pretty ornamentals. Sigh!
Bent most of them flat, but they are still growing?!
Best I could do in the wind.
Enjoy!
Thanks Sharon, I think he's cute too.
I can relate, you should see me climbing. Just remember 3 points of contact and hopefully you won't fall as much. I hope you get your new specs soon, wearing sunglasses can cause you to trip when you come inside from being out in the bright sunshine. I should know. I do it all the time.
If the had world championships in falling, I'd place, I'm sure. LOL!
Glad to hear your DH looks like he'll live through this, and that your shoulder isn't hurting as much.
Here's one of the poppies that went and bloomed any way. I forget which DG member gave me the seeds but I do love them and who ever you are, my thanks. Next year I'll be planting them where they get some shelter from the wind.
Enjoy!

Pretty poppy! Now, are those a variety that blooms all summer, as opposed to the wildflower poppies that bloom in spring along the roadways?

Well, we should be careful not to sound as if we were complaining about the unseasonably cool weather. It is going to heat up this weekend. I see, for this area, the average for June is 90+.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I just got back from Squaw Creek Resort in Tahoe where it snowed the hugest flakes that just floated in mass very slowly to the ground, past our window, it was something I will never forget, until my Nutra-Sweet Alzheimer catches up with me.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Dawn

Nutra-Sweet Alzheimer..............Did I miss something? What the heck is that? Large floating snowflakes sounds like heaven right now.
Love ya,
Sylvia

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

It was something right out of a movie, the flakes were like 2 inches each and floated and blew around like feathers in the wind. In the morning the ground was all white.

No it is a joke but my friend and I both started using Nutra-Sweet from the first day it came out, in large, or at least daily doses of the stuff. It is the only common thread we could come up with, years ago, that would explain our complete laps of actual memories of A LOT. Mostly it is short term memory or types of memories, that we can not hang on to. Some things people have to see to believe. Our families know and we both find ways to remember or maybe put those memories in another part of our brains, like writing them or retelling things to ourselves often. I don't know, but all these years later, it is known that artificial sweeteners are THE SINGLE worst thing you can consume, so they say. We are both highly addicted to it. We try to go off too and can hardly stay off for long.

It was meant as a joke though it is not really funny, but we call it Nutra-Sweet Alzheimers. (years ago a paper circulated the internet about how the FDA was in cahoots with the manufacturer of NS) but it was reported to be false later on the news. We don't wonder if it was false though.
