California Gardening: So. Calif. Spring RU 2010 - continued

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1069634/

We are meeting slightly earlier than originally discussed, so take note!

Saturday, April 24, 2010 for our Spring RoundUp at SingingWolf's home in Menifee. For those not familiar with the town, it is near Temecula and Murietta, etc. There is limited room for simple overnight camping - no hookups, just space to park a vehicle and pitch a tent. :-)

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Menifee&state=CA

Exact directions will be provided soon.

Set up will begin at 10am, lunch about 12noon. SW will lead a walking tour of the farm at 10:30am. Her DH will be giving hay rides throughout the day.

No theme - we'll be in the country, so dress comfortably and wear good walking/hiking shoes. SingingWolf wanted me to remind everyone to bring cameras - lots to see and beautiful landscape. Oh, and leave the white clothes at home! LOL

The food thread is here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070564/

The plant thread is here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070567/

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks KC,
The other thread was getting too long.
Just prior to the new page, Miguel who prefers to be known as Michael posted and said that he will be attending the RU with his DW and DS.

Michael is my oldest sons name. He is only called Miguel when he is in trouble. :o)

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Yeah, Marie, sounds like Mom's the world over. And you know you're in serious trouble when they use all of your names! LOL!

Yep Whenever I yell Miguel Antonio he knows something is wrong even at 24 yrs of age :o)

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

My dad used to call me Kathleen when I was in trouble - now I prefer it and only my family is allowed to call me Kathy (which I never liked)!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh, you're not a 'Kathy'. It's nice to have a 'proper' name to gracefully grow into. Not much you can do with Sherry....sigh

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

What is wrong with Sherry? It's a beautiful name, and a proper one too. Not unlike the person who bears the name. It's all good!
Kathleen, is it still allowed to call you KC? Just wondering. : - )

Kathleen, Tony will probably be coming with us.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

You know how it is...'Sherry' goes with white go-go boots......(and, no, I never had any...)

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Gee, I'm trying, but I just can't picture you in go-go boots, Sherry.
I can tell you what your name means to me. I've found Sherry's to be sensitive, fun loving, giving and smart. Kinda reminds me of what I know of you!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I'll answer to K, KC, Kaper, Kathryn, Caitlin, Catriona (these two are the Irish), but NOT Kathy! LOL
Sherrrrry is smooooooth.

Got it, Weege - just the two of you?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Rodica and Marie will be with us!

Crossville, TN

I WILL BE THERE...and am really looking forward to meeting Michael...no Miguel unless he trys to hog the chocolate...

Hellnzone11...I'm looking forward to seeing you again...I never got to visit with you very much before...and our precious Kathleen...I can't even think of you as Kathy..(psst...are you bringing an extra man again this year?).

Amy's ship gets home tomorrow...YIPEE...but they plan to take leave sometime so I don't know if she can come up or not....I will be arriving with my good friend...SoCal/Donna.....

Ya'll be good until I get there...then we'll see what all michief I can get you into. Jo

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'll help with the mischief, Jo!
Glad Amy will be home safe, and hope to meet her someday.

Jo we have had more conversations than you may remember but you were always so busy. You know how it is, it is like hosting a party and you never feel like you paid enough attention to any ONE person and may not remember even talking to some.

I found some recipes that I have not made in a long time from my grandma. One is for these pecan bars that were good. One for this Red Velvet cake, one for these family recipe for Almond Brittle, that I may made anyways, that my grandma made and was sworn to secrecy on the recipe until the woman she promised it to, died. They are like almond rocca, without the chocholate, just the rocca.

I should be lazy and bring this to die for Carrot Cake that Food For Less sells. MMMM

I am making myself hungry.

Look forward to meeting Michael and his family.

Crossville, TN

Well....I can never get enough of talking to people.....but I do tend to "flit"....like a bee...from one group to another...same way at my Senior's group. I must learn to sit still more...but rigormortist (sp) sets in if I stay in one place too long. Jo

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Thank goodness...the chocolate is safe! Well, maybe not! LOL So glad you can make it, Jo.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Jo you are a roll.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Well, it looks like we will be able to come and enjoy the RU. Sounds like a great time. When I called and asked about surgery on DH's shoulder they said 2-3 months, wow what a wait! They gave him stronger meds which seems to be helping. Now I have to go over to the food thread and see what I should bring. Sorry I don't have any plants, but I'm so looking forward to being on a farm.

My real name is Margaret, but have been called Peggy forever. I shortened it to Pegi when I got on the computer. I use both names and so far haven't confused myself. LOL

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

My mom is a Margaret/Peggy, too!

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Pegi

So wonderful and DH will be at the RU.
Sylvia

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Yeah Peggy, that is great news, more new faces. It is nice to have new people, but it is also nice to really be able to visit everyone, with it not being a huge event.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Sami/Pegi,
I am so sad your DH has to wait for so long for the surgery. I hope it doesn't cause him too much pain.
Selfishly, I am glad that you will be attending the RU. : - )
I just love meeting folks, and sharing my part of the world.
It's coming up quick. I've been working like a bee, trying to get things weeded, transplanted and separated, so no one better say anything about the dirt stains on the carpet. It came by them honestly! LOL!
We're going to have a great time.
Are you ready yet?
WIB!
SW

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Are you at the stage of dread yet or regret? lol

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

hellenzn, I am tired, but making progress. I am at the stage, where I am sure you all will understand if I don't have the cleanest house in the world, because you're having such a great time, and you know as soon as the RU is over, I'm ripping out those carpets. LOL! : - )
50 people (optimistically speaking) isn't anything. Try preparing for 4-500/day. That's a lot of work!
I do miss hosting the Pow Wow's though.
I am living in anticipation, and don't have room for regrets or dread for that matter. : - )
Very grateful for the gentle female rains we had overnight and into the morning today. You might get to see some wildflowers if you look down. : - )
I try very hard to have something to look forward to, but I also have to pace myself so I can enjoy it. It's a fine balance with my health, but by golly, I'm getting better at it.
Dad always said this was a healing kind of place. He was so right!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Lisa and I are really looking forward to this Jules. I know she wants to meet everyone. She's heard so much about you all.

John and Kathleen came by the other day while I was gone. Lisa got to meet them.

When we moved into this new place, I don't think either of us realized just what a disaster it was. We were mostly looking at the setting. After we got there and started really looking around, we realized there was, and is, a TON of work to do to make it comfortable. I think Lisa was a little embarrassed by the fact that we haven't gotten everything done yet, so she didn't invite John and Kathleen in. It's fairly close, but there's still much to do. We'll have a little get-together there when we're more organized. It might even be a good location for one of our RUs in a couple of years.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

We've always remodeled / built and about 34 years ago we were in our second home that we'd just bought, done nothing to yet. It was green Johns-Manville asphalt shingles on the outside, orange shag carpet on the inside...just the worst thing you've ever seen. Someone I'd gone to grade school and jr high with years before learned where we'd just moved to and her sister lived fairly close and she was going to be visiting her sister..."Could she stop by and say hello?" Well, of course I said "Sure" and then realized later that she'd not seen the house we just finished, she'd probably never see 'this' house when we were finished, she'd never in her life see me again and this is what she would remember me by. I sweated for a couple of weeks and then called her back and told her we'd have to be out of town that weekend.........the house we owned in front of this property, same story, old friend came to visit, saw that house before we started on it (And it was awful), never saw it when it was finished. Same story on this house...oldest friend comes to visit when we first get in (and this was condemned, a tear-down), hasn't seen it since. It just never fails.....it has happened over and over again...lol...

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

We didn't come to see the house, Randy! You said stop by, so we did, just to see if we could find it! LOL
Lisa was as welcoming as she could be to two strangers who 'dropped in' on her!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Kathleen, Lisa is incredibly hospitable and she felt she wasn't her usual self. We don't have trash service at our house so I have to haul the garbage to the dump. (there's a possibility for trash service, but you've seen our quarter-mile up-hill driveway) I had neglected the trash for a couple of days and there were a few large bags on the porch. That's what she was most concerned about. I know she's looking forward to you and John coming back for a visit. And I've been instructed to keep the trash down to a minimum. LOL.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Laugh at this one folks. My standards for cleanliness went way down, when I had kids. The cats aren't really a problem, and neither are the parakeets. Kids create chaos. You know, like Pigpen from Charlie Brown cartoons. That would be my ES. (Although Buddy Holly is helping right now, too!)
We've been in this house since '93, I think. The kitchen is overdue for an overhaul, and that carpet should have been gone 10 years ago. Thing is, I don't live in a model home, but one that is used and abused, and loved in and lived in. It's bound to have battle scars.
wcgypsy, you had me rolling with laughter at that orange shag carpet. My house, like my garden is an ongoing project. Come to think of it so is my life.
DP, I am looking forward to meeting Lisa too. I think she must be a swell gal to put up with the likes of you! : - )
I hear she makes good cookies too! : - )
Thanks weegy, Dad was the gentlest man I ever knew, if you discount his wicked sense of humor. LOL! Spending time with him was always special. : - )
DP, should we put you down for the projects list? I used to rehab houses, and can still wield a paintbrush and wash walls. I don't do ceilings though. I do like to have fun while working so music is mandatory! LOL! : - )
Really, things are proceeding as they should, and I'm not stressing about the house or even the garden. The gh is almost back to normal, and life is good. So the RU should be a lot of fun for me too.

We didn't notice it, DP - just her smiling face.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm sure she'll be glad to hear that K.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I've got many projects in mind for the house and yard, but some of them may never get done. Painting my kitchen was going to be first project for 2010, but getting toward the end of April and I'm still procrastinating. What did I ever do before I discovered the computer, so much a part of my life now. LOL

Getting closer to the time and looking forward to seeing all of you.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm looking forward to meeting you too. Lucky me, I'm actually getting some projects completed! I finally get to get that wrought iron lawn furniture sanded and repainted. Yippee! That's part of why you haven't heard from me. Been having to supervise closely, DH's worker. Also been transplanting and generally getting ready for the RU.
Weather has me inside today. Brrr, windy and cold.
Hope we have good weather for the RU!

My son and his baby may come too, or instead of my dd and her baby.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Okay, how old is the baby? Do I need to take special precautions about the pool?
Please LMK.
Thanks,
WIB,
SW

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

No we will do that, 1. They are both 1. Maybe they will come without them. I would love to spend time with them and it is ok if you don't want them, I am fine with that.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I love kids, just don't want them to get hurt, so I have a tendency to baby proof as needed. Besides toothless grins are awfully hard to resist. : - )

SW
