Rhubarb-broccoli ??

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

Does anyone grow rhubarb...??... I'm wondering if this is what it looks like if it goes to seed..??....

OR...

because I have it so close to my broccoli there's been a 'cross' of sorts. ???

Weird...never seen this happen before to my rhubarb when I've planted broccoli in this bed before.

That is the seed head. They all do that. I
normally cut them off so the plant will send out more stalks and not concentrate on making seeds.
Do not eat them.

Oh good -- it's just a coincidence that it looks like the broccoli then...

Thanks!

Yes, just a coincidence... Enjoy the Rhubarb!

Have you ever planted the seeds?

No, I have never started from seed, but it probably could be done. The seed companies do sell seeds. I got my roots from the local garden club. The roots can be divided every year to make a larger bed.
If your plant is not very old, I would not recommend letting it go to seed. You will get diminished harvest from your rhubarb. If you have a lot of plants, you can let one go to seed and try planting the seeds from that.
But, if you have a large plot of Rhubarb, what would you do with more? LOL

I've got the one plant... it's about 3yrs (?) old. I don't think I've ever seen it go to seed like this.

I did find this about planting the seeds --> http://www.rhubarbinfo.com/rhubarb-propagation.html

I'm sort of surprised that I'm able to get the rhubarb to grow here in HOT Texas...but I'm in N. Texas and we do get some cold weather so maybe that's why.

RE: about cutting off the root stalk.... do you cut it at the bottom of the stalk...or just at the seeded crown ??

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

I just cut mine off at the bottom so the stem doesn't use any resources.
As far as dividing goes, you can do that. But I would let the plant get a little older...
The farmers I knew growing up in Iowa would just run the tiller through the patch at the end of the season to cut up the roots. ;)
You can divide yours by dividing the roots and spreading them out in your bed. Rhubarb is very forgiving.
I was surprised that you have it in Texas. My SO other just commented on that as he lived in Texas and never was able to grow Rhubarb. Lucky you.

I am lucky...even my brother in CA is envious.

What's even funnier is that I had it planted in another spot and it wasn't doing ANYTHING. So I dug it up and sort of just 'stuck it' in this bed...sort of temporarily until I figured out something else. Well it just 'took'. Dunno..??..
