Garden Projects 3 - 2010

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Pat - those color combinations are my favorite. That bed is going to be just beautiful. Please do post some pics this summer when it is roaring with color! My DH has a similar high regard for duct tape. It tends to show up in the strangest places! LOL

Victor - but does electrical tape come in such fun colors as duct tape now does? LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

even more than duct tape Louise!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes it does. Used for identifying wires.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bill, I haven't heard any complaints about Holly bathing in the front yard, but a lota' guys smile and wave as they ride by. LOL That old tub had a family history before Holly made a water feature out of it. There's an old link below.
Louise, the bed around the tub is dug and amended for planting, the mulched area around the conifers is a lasagna and planted over with vinca minor. Ric

Bill, If you come down here to work on my yard I'll feed you whatever you want.

Can't wait to see the finished project, Pat

Ric, that bathtub pic always makes me smile

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

They're putting in an inground pool next door, you know where my other pile of rocks came from. Guess what? Yep, more rocks and they offered to deliver them out front where I'm putting in a wall. Twist my arm please. LOL Ric

Nice! Invite Bill for a weekend.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I got a truck!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

those are HUGE! I think i would stand those up and plant them in the ground.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think a mini Stonehenge would be nice - especially if you have it done by Solstice.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

party at Bill's

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Outstanding load of rocks ! What a wall you will have. How the heck will you move those huge things around? Oh I see someone already answered...call Bill.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

those are too big for any human - they will need heavy equipment

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I spent the day yesterday at my sister's house. We dug up and rearranged 3 of her gardens. We had enough of one hosta to make 41 smaller clumps. We replanted 32 of them. It was a great exhausting day, but will look nice when it fills in.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

32 of the same hosta - she must REALLY like it!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

think I might be doing that with my ugly berm behind the house... and my neighbors 2 - 4' diameter hostas... 2 years ago we helped her dig them up and put hostas everywhere we had a spot... they are right back where they were.. when you got it... you got it.. just too bad they are the plain green ones

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice DL bed Bill.......wanna come to Maine and make a few more? LOL

I love the tub Ric & Holly!!

Deb, one hosta made that many smaller ones?? Must of been huge!!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I just bought a few hosta's for my woodline......trying to fill it in.
2 Golden Standard
3 Yellow River
3 Mama Mia
3 Zounds

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the only thing I worry about doing that... is it might be too much of an invite for the deer... and the reason I haven't done it yet... still keep wondering what they won't like that I can plant back there under the trees ... and the berm is 1/2 rock 1/2 soil

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Came across these for deer resistant......you own all of they alreay , right? LOL

She had about 13 plants between her garage and sidewalk, they were originally from our mom's garden many years ago. Not necessarily really love it but we have it and she has 40 some acres...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL Celeste... I am working on it... but there isn't enough sun back there for the AG's ... I don't think

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Allison, I don't buy them, and I try not to look at them (well pics I do) because they are z6 and up. They don't like Maine. :(

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Nice work on dividing and planting all those hosta. I would love to have more here but they are like candy for Bambi and friends. They say the blues and yellows are less tasty.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can do cuttings for you Celeste.... mine are doing fine in the basement.. 1/2 dormant

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You bring yours in for the winter Allison? And it works?? Maybe I will try them then!!^_^

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

first year trying it.... and so far they look alive... don't buy any... I have lots I can do cuttings from

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ok, thanks...I'll try one, don't want to try to many and then have to have a mass burial cos I killed all. :(

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the desert sunrise is the best for me... but it gets big pretty quick

I just stuck two small cuttings in this container last spring (behind the bird)... they both bloomed & returned this year

Nice!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Cool Catbird too!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bill, funny you would say that, I was thinking of planting one at the ends of the wall, like post. They are movable it just take a bit of inspiration, levers, rollers, and a jack. Some can even walk using a bi-pod and garden tractor. Ric

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

would like to see the project - sounds like building a pyramid

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Dug a weed/grass blocking trench around my yellow and blue garden, but doesn't have that finished look, I think I'm going to fill it with mulch.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It will be messy after heavy rains.

I'm having my cutters edge all my beds. Then I will attempt to remove the grass that has infiltrated.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

could have to scout the backyard for another bed site - looks like i am going to have some dirt left over - almost done with the bed expansion out front just need to replant the lambs ear to hold the steep side together from erosion - or might just use the extra to spread on existing beds and to use with planting the new arrivals - have to see what is left afterward.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

If the mulch was in the "trench" why would it be messy?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Don't fill it to the top with mulch or it will get washed out and also defeat the purpose of the trench to provide an air pocket where roots from grass won't grow. A thin layer of an inch or so would be okay for a finished look. I think that's what he meant.

I got two clems transplanted to their new home in my secret alley garden project this am. Wanted to get them moved before the replacements arrive and before the rains come for the next few days. Here is a pic of their new home. Still a work in progress. On the left side there will be new clems planted after I prepare the bed and on the right side some lavenders and maybe sunflowers or annuals. At the far end there will be stone steps down to the backside of the yard after all the junk is removed. Here is a pic of the start of it all.
