Daily pics vol. 299

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Almost up to 300 pages!! A revisit to page 1 would be interesting to see what's changed, but finding it won't be easy!! But page 298 where we just came from is here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1081900/

Here's one of my Eiders again to start the new page

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Nice one, Res!

Today was cold & windy! I had lot of visitors to the suet feeder & other feeders.

The Myrtle Warblers are looking worse then the Goldfinches. Here's a pic of the Myrtle & a Chipping Sparrow

Resin - Nice start to the new thread. I don't think I'd have the patience to try to find Page 1. I wonder how many of today's posters are on that first thread. I know I wasn't.

thebestmissy - I was going to remark that your Myrtle Warbler looks just like my Yellow-rumped Warbler. And then I looked up "Myrtle" Warbler in Kenn Kaufman's book. It said to see "Yellow-rumped Warbler". I never knew that the "Myrtle" is the eastern version of the Y-r Warbler and the "Audobon" is the Western version. Based on where you live in Texas, you may even be able to photograph both kinds. They used to be separate species, but not anymore. Quite interesting reading.

gardenpom - the eye of the White-winged Dove has real nice color.

Here's a composite of a male and female Brown-headed Cowbird. I already knew the male when I saw one. But when I saw the female by herself, I thought maybe I had me a Lifer. And then more B-h Cowbirds landed and I knew what I had - females and males.

Here's a bunch of B-h Cowbirds feeding.

Here's a composite of a Chipping Sparrow that Resin confirmed the ID on. I was 99 % sure of its ID, but the way the eye line ended made me wonder. I've never seen that before.

From a long ways off, the Sigma 150-500 mm lens captured this White-throated Sparrow. I saw some movement and snapped a pic. Don't know what I had until I got it on the computer and cropped it.

Snapped a pic of this Robin just before it took a sip of water.

For my last one - this Robin was perched on a limb, stretching and preening.

Great start to another thread Resin! That Eider is beautiful!

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

MargaretK - THANK YOU very much.

WOW, Resin started the very first one on 01 / 02 / 2007 and then did another on Jan 30, 2007. Later, on 2/2/07, pelletory started the practice of naming them "Daily Pics". Actually, if you count the first two Resin started, we're on 301 now (2+299).

And then I read from pelle that there were quite a few threads earlier, so I guess there's no telling how many Daily Pics threads there really are - certainly more than 300.

And the only monikers of friends I readily recognized in those first 3 Daily Pics threads were:

Resin
pelletory
Grasmussen and
tigerlily

There were many, many others, but I honestly can't say that I recognized their monikers.

Very nice shots GP,Missy and Hack!

Margaret, Thanks for finding those links to the first threads. Yes Hack some of the people are not on the website anymore, 1 passed away (trois) and others just don't post here anymore.

There were quite a few threads before the start of the Daily Pics thread.

Greta start Resin!

Margaret...thanks for the links to the begining! I see some are still here and a few that I now wonder where they went.

My little guy is very sick with a very bad bladder infection...so 3 weeks of antibiotics for him. Poor guy has very little control so I had to stop and get some spray rug cleaner and lots of paper towels! Good thing I love him...

This Blue Jay has an unusual beak....

I had a pair of Song Sparrowa in the yeard last week. I was not able to get them both in the same shot darn it!

Gee, another new start. Wonderful photos in the last thread everyone.

Resin, thanks for the new start and the link-I'll have to check it out. Love that Eiders' coloring.

Missy, cute photos of the birds and suet.

GP, the egrets are beautiful and that dove is just gorgeous. Great closeup of it too. Love the coloring with the cardinal.

Hack, I went on a bird walk with our local Audubon members and we discussed the Yellow-rumped Warbler. They told me the easiest way to i.d. the Audubon is that it has a yellow patch under the beak where the Myrtle has a white patch. Now all I have to do is remember just one of these!LOL Great photo of the C. sparrow. Love that White throated, hope you'll find more of them. Nice timing on that last robin shot-great job. I can sure tell you're enjoying the camera as much as I am.

We went on a birdwalk at one of our local state parks last Saturday and I'm still getting my photos together. Trouble is, my first Bullock's Oriole just arrived today at my hummer feeder so I had to run and fill a new orange feeder I got just for the orioles. So far this guy is still just going to the hummer's feeder. Doesn't that figure??? Anyway, I'm watching for my first photo op, so I'll post more photos tomorrow.

This is the first time I've ever actually seen the crest on a Double crested Cormorant out on our lake. Sorry the lighting was all wrong.

Nanny, I forgot to comment on your lovely photos. I guess that pretty jay has figured out how to eat with that very unusual beak. Great observation. Great job with the sparrow and junco too.

Here's one of many Coots.

We found a large flock of Bushtits at the park and they sure were enjoying the new buds on trees.

Here's a new one for my photo album, a Brown Creeper that I've never seen before.

Thumbnail by ducbucln

And another new one for my album is the Wood Duck. There were several on a small creek but we couldn't go closer because they were nesting and we didn't want to disturb them.

I loaded my broken feeder with a few special treats for this one today. The Golden-fronted Woodpecker, I think it's the male because it's got the red along with yellow and orange.

Thumbnail by LindaTX8
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

He's beautiful Linda. Wow, I'd love to see him here in our area!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, he sure is! I intended to post a second shot, but got interrupted...here it is. I saw two of them yesterday...one looked like a female, but didn't get a good pic at the time. Here's the same woodpecker.

Thumbnail by LindaTX8
NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Yesterday when I put the sunflower seeds, dried fruit and nuts out in the broken feeder, the two woodpeckers came quickly and so did two Western Scrub Jays. So one jay grabbed something and flew away, the second one spotted a moth and flew down by my deck steps to pursue the moth...got it too! That left the way clear for the woodpeckers, who had been calling out loudly from the tree, to take turns on the feeder. A pic I took earlier of a jay.

Red-bellied woodpecker? In my front yard.

Not sure... this is the best pic I could get of him... just past my back fence.
Maybe a Southern Pileated Woodpecker? He's definitely bigger.
