How do I know if my perennials survived the winter?

Morgantown, WV

Hi! We had a warmer but snowier winter than usual, and now that things are warming up, I'm trying to figure out which plants have survived and which need to be replaced.

I'm concerned about the columbines (a few do show new growth, but most are completely brown), astilbe (all brown), and agastache (A.cana -- part stayed green under the snow cover, but A.foeniculum and A.rugosa are both completely brown).

When should I expect new growth to emerge, and at what point should I replace them?

Thanks for your help!

My best advice would be to check the cold hardiness info for each plant. If they are hardy in your area, then I would suggest as soon as frost danger is past, cut them back and give them a couple weeks of warmer weather to resprout....I would think the columbines and astilbe should return, but not familiar with the habits of the agastache. Your cooperative extension service should be able to help you.

All those plants are hardier in colder zones than yours, so I expect they should come back just fine. I also believe that most of them are herbaceous, which means it would be perfectly normal for them to die back over the winter, and they should put out new growth come spring.

Thanks! I know they are hardy in my zone and beyond. I guess I just need to be patient and see what happens. Thanks again.
