Tropical Garden #69

Red Oak, TX

lakessidecallas, thanks, I did leave my Chinese banana plant out for the first time this last winter, the mother plant that bloomed last summer is mush. It is supposed to be hardy up to zone 7a. Go figure.
I would love to see whats blooming in your greenhouse!!

Rj, I can tell that it was a nice day in Houston from your pictures, I tend to overwork myself pulling weeds on these nice sunny days. That is one job that no one but another gardener can help you with. Ken pulled out all of my zinnias last time that he helped.
Your cross vine seems to brighten up your back yard. very pretty

tropicbreeze, thanks for the tour of your property, I enjoyed every one of your pictures I will have to take a second look later.
I would be proud to grow a Xanthosoma Robusta that size, I hardly see anyone growing them. You made that one in Papua New Guinea look good!

I enjoyed viewing everyones plants and bloom's but Rita your new Alocasia Bambino arrow caught my eye. Very nice.

New Anthurium . I admire the elongated leaf form on this one.

Tropic, I truly admire viewing your gardens and the plants you choose to garden with but I have to agree the plant you assumed was an Alocasia portei "seedling" is not an Alocasia and perhap's the one in post #7657689 could be in the longiloba group? Very nice X. robusta and I too would be awful proud to grow one as large as you have as well.

New leaf on my Alocasia portei.

so nice to see such tropicals.. I wish my cuppea anthurium would wake up since I cut it per someones reccomendation, I havn't seen it or the other one I got last fall come up.. I pulled them out and they still have roots, but one of the king warsomethings, LOL only has roots and no bulbs.... is it a goner??

How did the root's look Debra? Dead or alive;-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

they looked like part white and part brown, i just put them back in..

There is still hope then for the plant/plant's in question.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

maybe some sun will help..soon.. I hope.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

My crossvine is just now developing buds. Wisteria should be blooming any day now. What a difference 200 miles makes, RJ.

Tropic, Anchomanes do have small spines on them. I have some more photos somewhere, I'll have to dig them up tonight. I really enjoy looking at your plants and you have so many, must be like living in a botanical garden!

Prita, I ran out and took some photos yesterday but didn't get them downloaded last night. We're running around like crazy because we're having company come to stay tomorrow and we're catching up on 6 months of cleaning and junk.
Have you seen that show "hoarders?" lol we're not quite that bad but close!

DH is giving me the evil eye because I stopped working, got to get back!

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

I bought this bulb hoping it was something exotic, rats... The spiky thing to the right is Silk Floss Tree- Ceiba speciosa. I love those things.

Another one with 3 flower stalks, and it still has the fruit from last year- I guess they're ready to pick. I think this is a yellow one.

Here's baby- Unfortunately a very cloudy day so the color isn't too bright.

Close up of the individual flowers- look at the fuzzy green part.
I see the ???pistil?? but I don't see any pollen anywhere. Geep, I can't remember the parts of the flower- can you believe I got an A in my intro to Horticulture class? Only about 3-4 years ago but all the info is GONE!

My pineapple! I cut the top off a grocery store pineapple and wonders of wonders, it rooted. I'm so excited about my baby fruit!

I've been doing a bit of research on the internet and am certain now this aroid is Anchomanes difformis. It's supposed to grow 1.8 to 2.4 metres (6 to 8 feet) high, so mine still have a lot of growing to go.

Thinking back, I recall seeing a clump of red seeds in Cairns and some must have fallen off into my pocket. Same as some palm seeds. Funny how some seeds seem to do that. When I planted them I'd thought they were the ones from Papua New Guinea. Some palms came up with them which surprised me at the time but I thought they'd just got mixed up. But it still doesn't explain where my Alocasia portei seed got to. Unless they didn't survive the cleaning they got followed by the long trip. Lost their viability, got planted and rotted.

But thanks to lakesidecallas who got me onto the right track.

By the way, that Ceiba speciosa looks very much like our Bombax ceiba. It has a similar prickly trunk and grows into a huge tree with red flowers.

The citrus are blooming all over Florida now and the air is so unbelievably fragrant! It might be one of my favorite scents.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

lakeside.

Question here.

My GD went on a 'field trip' to Costa Rica last year with her class. She is a great photographer and showed me calla lilies grown as borders of yards, many 50' long and 4'wide. There were others just out in clumps in the fields. They were amazing.

Now. how do I get to grow just a couple? Don't need a hedge, just a couple.

Thanks.

lakesidescallas, you have lots of spring color in your greehouse. I love the Chinese Musella bloom!! Mine was a show stopper last year mainly because friends had not seen one bloom before and they bloom for a long time as well.
The Brazilian Edelweiss is a new plant for me. I will have to look it up.
Thanks for sharing your GH blooms, keep them coming.

I wish that my hoophouse was as tall as yours, my poor Ti black banana is ready for me to take the plastic off.

awwww.. gee I don't think I have one of those.. I love that blue hibiscus.. does it set seed? That red flower is a beautiful NOID.

zone 6a, KY

Prita, your red flower looks like jacobinia or justicia, brazilian plume, one of those guys :)

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

LOL Happy, is that a hint??

Rita, my GH is a bit too tall for heating well. When I ordered eight foot walls I was thinking of the ceilings in our house and forgot how much the roof would go up from that point.
Good for bananas, though!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

LS,

I apologize from my heart. I never thought about you growing them, it was just a question. I don't think that they would grow this far S.
