Tropical Garden #69

Oh that is a gorgeous Amaryllis!!!!

Keaau, HI

That noid red flower might be Pachystachys coccinea. Any more photos of the plant?

Red Oak, TX

Joeswife, As yet, I havn't seen any seed pods on the Blue Hibiscus. I have a Stepaonosis and a Allamanda seed pod and a few other seeds to send to you whenever they are ready.

Lakesidecallas, I have to agree with you,Happy_1 is very funny! I always enjoy reading her comments.
You Guys are lucky to enjoy your grandkids and send them home. I brought my GS home from the hospital 18 years ago, hopefully he will leave after he graduates high school this year.

3jsmom31, thanks, that makes two in a row that you have correctly ID'ed for me.

Metrosidros, thanks for the correct ID of my Pachystachys coccinea ( Red Justicia), it was a cutting from candela.

Sunshinesw, it is good to see you! I hope that you are not working as hard as I have been, trying to clean up the winter mess. I found a few more dead plants today and a few that I had forgotten that I bought, which is a good thing.
Your Amaryllis Chico is a Beauty!
I finally have a bloom on the Queen's Wreath vine.

That Amaryllis Chico looks so unreal! I have yet to see any kind of Amaryllis blooms from any of the bulbs, or crinums either for that matter, but the leaves are sure pretty.. ( except my prenniel naked ladies)
Rita, really? You grew a buddah belly? How cute! It is so good to see you all posting pictures. My hibs are all in buds downstairs, one Elizabeth brug is still bloomed, and the tropical vines are all trying to climb out the windows, but hey, they can wait until it gets a wee bit warmer here in the lows. Full Red Moon tonight.. time to plant?
Duke says, hey... it isn't green enough yet here.. ( this is from last year)

Good for you Cass. Gotta do that again one of these days. Did a lion's face and Wilma smashed it. Dern her.

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

It was almost a very short visit. The 4 year old started screaming 10 minutes after she got here and about 2 hours later I couldn't find my kitten and thought she might have gotten outside when they were unloading the car. Searched 4 hours for her, many tears (we had seen a hawk swooping right outside our window), but she calmly strolled out of some hiding spot at 12:30 am.
I love the kids but it's a bit nerve-wracking because 51 weeks out of the year it is just the 2 of us.

Things are going much smoother now though, and we are having fun.

Congrats on the buddha belly flower! Sunshine, that Amaryllis is wonderful and bizarre!

7 flowers today...

wow, incredible. Those amarylis are beautiful. mine did not bloom this year.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That is a nightmare you poor dear. My dogie, Archie, ran out of the yard when I was not paying attention and I searched for him hysterically. A neighbor found him as I was about to do another walk-around. Then when you find them, you want to kill them for driving you crazy. Right?

As far as the kids, my daughter can sympathize with you for she is 47 and never had any. Any child that even makes a peep, she goes into an attack mode. Not pretty.

Hap

My Amaryllis are ALL blooming, what a joy! My jerk of a neighbor threw away a whole bunch of bulbs a few years ago and I sure am grateful ^_^

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hetty,

We all should have such great neighbors. hehe

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

those are beautiful! I am hoping to see some blooms once mine get outside... can they tolerate lows in the high 40s?

Mount Vernon, OH

Hello, new here to this group. I was browsing. Wondering if anyone knows about Tacca (bat flowers) I seeded some and now I have 2 plants coming up (looks like a third maybe comeing) I am not sure about soil, watering and all that stuff now that they come up though I do know they are slow growers and do not flower for 1-2 years.
Thanks I appreciate it!
Tish

Welcome Tish and I understand Tacca are very slow to grow from seed so well done!!
Someone else will no doubt give you more info, I don't have any experience with these plants. I assume you've checked Plant Files?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi Tish, and welcome. Great group here. Know nada about the bats.

Hap

Keaau, HI

Tacca, Bat Flower likes an acidic leafy soil, which is well drained. A mixture of leaf mold and coarse bark works well.

The plants love moisture and can be watered freely, but do not like standing water. Make sure the pots are well drained.

They should be fed a liquid fertilizer, at half strength, monthly.

They like bright filtered light, but not direct hot sunlight.

Keep the seedlings warm, between 70 to 80 degrees F.

Given the above conditions, they are easy to grow!

Joeswife, I did buy the Buddha Belly in Houston when I went plant shopping with Rj and phughes.

lakesidecallas, I like your Amaryllis as well. Glad to hear that your kitten is fine. I will have my 3 younger GK on Sat. but they always go home at night. My 5 year old GD loves to help in the garden.

LiliMerci, maybe your Amayrllis will bloom for you later in the season, I too have a few that I am waiting on.

Dutchlady, you are always finding great treasures in the trash. Your last thread stater was a beautiful orchid that you rescued .

Please show us your concrete birdbath when finished, I hope that you will get help putting it togeher. It looks heavy.

Tishrh, Welcome!
I am so Happy that Metrosideros was able to answer your question. I have tried more times than I will admit, to growing the Tacca without any success.
Good luck with yours', and don't be a stranger.

I bought a Tacca a few years ago but it's never flowered. The native Tacca grows like a weed here and has no problems flowering (to be expected though, since it's a native).

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

That Tacca looks very cool!
Rita those blooms on the last pictures are pretty// is that a clivia?

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

prita, that is good to know. I hope so too.

Saw a gorgeous bunch of Taccas blooming on Kauai last year. Here is a shot.

thanks everyone for the welcomes and the pictures. By the way, everyones pictures are gorgeous!

I hope I can keep these tacca going. They seem to be germinating pretty good, I have a fourth tacca coming up as of this morning. So I have 3 black taccas and one green. I planted the seed on Jan. 1 of this year.

Metrosideros- thanks for the information. I read somewhere they love compost too. Is this true? I am trying to come up with some kind of soil. I know it has to be good draining. I have worm castings and wondered if I mixed with vermiculite and then maybe peat based soil to add acidity....

I just don't want these to die. lol.

thanks everyone!

Red Oak, TX

Joeswife, that is a yellow Clivia, growing in a pot. I do have one orange, that bloomed earlier, planted in the ground and another orange in a pot with no blooms as yet. Does anyone have a variegated Clivia that they do not want? lol
It must be very pretty in your basement garden with all those blooms.

Dutchlady, That is a excellent picture, it makes me want to try growing them again.

my mom has an orange clivia. They are pretty. I don't see too many yellow ones.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh Rita is that a wisteria? I am so hoping for blooms this year. Mine are four years old now. I have been pruning, cleaning and making messes all night in the basement Garden, and I have had fun. Now .. to clean it up.
Have a Wonderful weekend and a Blessed Easter, all of you..

Good morning all. We have a new thread.
