Bell Pepper Questions

Borderline 6b/7a, AR

I just got some seeds for orange bell peppers ... and don't have a clue what to do with them. I just started some tomatoes and read elsewhere that peppers germinate on a similar timeline but prefer slightly warmer conditions. Is that true? And do I keep them really moist or just slightly damp, and is a windowsill enough or do they need full sun? If they get leggy, can I plant them deeper like tomatoes or does it spell disaster? Ack, I'm lost. Any advice would be most appreciated. :-)

CroppingUp, welcome to Dave's Garden! There's another forum for Beginner Vegetables, this one is more for ornamental plants. No biggie, I made the same mistake when I joined, but you'll get lots more vegetable questions answered over there. :)

My peppers took a little longer to germinate than my tomatoes, but I didn't try to keep them slightly warmer either, and I watered them just like the rest of my seeds and seedlings. Mine are still in a south window, but I run a fan on them during midday, so they don't get too hot. And no, it's not a good idea to plant them deeper if they get leggy. They don't root along the stem like tomatoes do. Some people have done it with no problems, but it's not recommended. Hope this helps!

Concur; I don't do anything special either. Just plant them in cells and set them in a sunny window. When I put them in the ground I may set to the cotyledons but no deeper. I do repot into cups before final transplanting. Eggplants in foreground, peppers include bells Crispy, Mavras, Satsuma, Canary; Frying peppers Italia, La Rouge Royale; Hot pepper Ixtapa, Jamaican Yellow.

Farmerdill, thanks! I already repotted my peppers into solo cups, but may have to do another pot increase. These are really growing fast. No leggy, though.

those are looking wonderful Farmerdill! we watched a show on peppers and I've been asked to put in a bhut jolokia pepper plant. There's no way I would eat one but hey, might as well try one and see how it goes!

Wow, nice-looking peppers. I've got mine planted in a large tray without dividers, hoping to avoid a re-pot. They are moist and snuggled in a south-facing window. Thanks all for the replies ... and I'll try to remember and post veggie questions in the veggie forum. ;-)
