Holly questions

Dighton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone~

I recently purchased a centennial girl holly (blue holly). I have six or seven male japanese holly shrubs spread throughout my yard. Will those pollinate her or do I need a similarly variety in the same landscape bed?

thanks,
rachel

From what I have read, all that is necessary is a male holly in proximity to your female...the pollenizations is done by insects and it does not seem to matter what cultivar it is for berries. Here is an article you may find interesting.

What themoonhowl writes is accurate - as long as the male hollies are blooming at the same time as the female hollies. If the bloom times do not overlap, there won't be any chance for pollination.

It is always more reliable to have male plants of the same or more similar species to ensure adequate pollination. If you have not already, keep a tally of when your plants bloom (male Ilex crenata and female Ilex x meserveae 'Centennial Girl') for future reference - and posting that knowledge here.

Here are some additional resources on bloom times and needs for various members of the genus Ilex. Join the HSA if you are severely addicted to this great group of plants - I can provide high commendations to the comraderie and plant knowledge shared by members of this group over the past 25 years.

You guys really know your stuff, so i'm throwing a question out there too : ) I've got two hollys that are getting a little too big...and would really like to put more of these beauties in the yard too. Is it ok to dig 'em up and split them, provided all have good strong root systems? Is there a way to prevent them from going into shock (and thus, looking like an eyesore for everyone to see)? Do they propigate well with root hormone?
