Longleaf Pine is my only choice for a pine in my garden. It is very hardy, strong, long-lived, resistant to drought, fire, flood, hurricane, vermin. It provides shelter and food for wildlife when it gets bigger. It will not die during your lifetime, and will allow understory plants to grow as well. It is also helpful in that it will take up large amounts of carbon dioxide, a good thing for our planet. If you are considering a pine, think Longleaf!
